En México la demanda de maíces híbridos forrajeros (Zea mays L.) ha incrementado aceleradamente. El objetivo del estudio fue identificar híbridos más productivos, estables y de mayor calidad forrajera para diferentes regiones del país. En 2004 se evaluaron cuatro híbridos del Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias (INIFAP) y tres comerciales, en seis localidades del país con diferencias extremas en altitud y clima: Pabellón, Ags., Iguala, Gro., Chapingo, Méx., Valle del Yaqui, Son. y Torreón, Coah., primavera y verano. Se utilizó un diseño de bloques completos al azar con tres repeticiones. Se fertilizó con 180 a 240 kg ha-1 de N y 70 a 90 kg ha-1 de P y se sembró a una densidad de población de 80 mil plantas/ha. Se midió materia seca total (MST), fibra detergente neutro (FDN) y ácido (FDA), digestibilidad in vitro (DIV), proteína cruda (PC), y se estimó la producción de leche por hectárea (LEHA). Hubo interacción híbridos x localidades para MST y LEHA (P ≤ 0.05). El híbrido subtropical ‘H-376’ sobresalió en MST a través de localidades, con producciones de 17.6 a 23.0 t ha-1; también sobresalió ‘H157’ de valles altos pero sólo en localidades más favorables como Pabellón, Iguala, Torreón Primavera y Chapingo con rendimientos de 20.0 a 23.9 t ha-1. El testigo ‘ABT-7887’ fue el mejor en calidad forrajera con menor FDN y mayor DIV, y superó a ‘H-376’ en 37 y 33 g kg-1, respectivamente en promedio de ambientes. En producción de leche por hectárea sobresalieron ‘H-376’ y ‘H-157’ por su estabilidad a través de ambientes especialmente en Iguala, Pabellón, Sonora y Torreón en siembras de primavera, donde rindieron entre 11.5 y 13.8 t ha-1. El testigo ‘Z-23’ tuvo mejor respuesta en ambientes más favorables, como Sonora y Pabellón donde rindió más de 15.0 t ha-1.
En este trabajo se evaluó el efecto de la densidad de población y la altura de corte sobre el rendimiento y valor nutritivo del maíz para forraje. El experimento se realizó en el Campo Experimental “Pabellón”, en Aguascalientes, México, con el híbrido comercial Halcón sembrado a tres densidades: 60 mil, 80 mil y 100 mil plantas/ha, y tres alturas de corte: 15, 30 y 45 cm. Se utilizó un diseño de bloques al azar con tres repeticiones y arreglo en parcelas divididas, donde la parcela mayor fue la densidad y la parcela menor la altura de corte. No se encontró efecto significativo (P ≤ 0.05) de la densidad ni de la interacción densidad x altura de corte en las variables de estudio, excepto en porcentaje de materia seca. Al aumentar la altura de corte disminuyó (P ≤ 0.05) el rendimiento de forraje seco de 21.5 a 18.6 t ha-1, se incrementó el porcentaje de elote de 39.6 a 43.1 %, disminuyó el contenido de fibra detergente neutro de 45.8 a 43.4 % y el de fibra detergente ácido de 25.5 a 23.3 %, y se incrementó la digestibilidad de 74.9 a 80.1 % y la producción estimada de leche por tonelada de materia seca de 837 a 1009 kg. La producción de leche por hectárea no varió (P > 0.05) con la altura de corte y presentó una media de 18.6 t ha-1. Los resultados indican que al incrementar la altura de corte se mejora el valor nutricional del forraje de maíz sin efecto de la densidad de población entre 60 y 100 mil plantas/ha.
En México, tradicionalmente el maíz (Zea mays L.) se corta para ensilaje cuando el grano se encuentra en estado lechoso-masoso o masoso, y se obtiene una baja proporción de elote, lo que refleja una menor producción y calidad del forraje. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el criterio de avance de la línea de leche para precisar la etapa óptima de corte en cuanto a la producción y calidad del forraje de maíz en dos híbridos de diferente ciclo biológico. El experimento se estableció en Aguascalientes, México, con los híbridos ‘Halcón’ (precoz) y ‘3028W’ (intermedio). Las etapas de corte fueron: masoso, 1/3, 1/2 y 2/3 del avance de línea de leche. Se utilizó un diseño de bloques al azar con cuatro repeticiones y arreglo en parcelas divididas, donde los híbridos fueron las parcelas grandes y las etapas de corte las menores. La interacción híbrido x etapa sólo fue significativa (P ≤ 0.05) para el porcentaje de materia seca. El híbrido de ciclo intermedio superó en 6.6 t ha-1 de materia seca y en 2940 kg ha-1 de leche al híbrido precoz (P ≤ 0.05), pero la calidad del forraje fue similar entre ambos híbridos. Conforme avanzó el estado de madurez, de masoso a 2/3 de línea de leche, se incrementó el rendimiento de materia seca en 4.7 t ha-1, la proporción de elote en 17.5 unidades, y la producción de leche por tonelada de materia seca en 168 kg y de leche por hectárea en 6030 kg. El contenido de fibra detergente neutro disminuyó 6.9 unidades y el de fibra detergente ácido 3.6 unidades. La digestibilidad de la materia seca no varió y presentó una media de 66.6 %. Los resultados indican que al cosechar en etapas de 1/2 a 2/3 de línea de leche es mejor que cosechar en estado masoso porque se incrementan la producción y el valor nutricional del forraje.
El manejo agronómico del maíz (Zea mays L.) es importante para obtener altos rendimientos y buena calidad forrajera. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar el efecto de la fecha de siembra, dosis de nitrógeno y densidad de población en el rendimiento y calidad forrajera de dos híbridos precoces de maíz, en Pabellón, Aguascalientes, México. Se evaluaron los híbridos 'Halcón' y 'H-322E', sembrados el 6 de mayo y 17 de junio del 2003, a tres densidades de población (60, 80 y 100 mil plantas/ha) y dos dosis de N (180 y 240 kg ha-1). La cosecha se efectuó cuando el grano se encontraba a 1/3 de la línea de la leche. Se midió: producción de materia seca total (MST), contenido de fibra detergente neutro (FDN) y ácido (FDA), digestibilidad in vitro (DIV), y se estimó la producción de leche por tonelada de materia seca (LET) y por hectárea (LEHA). En la siembra tardía la MST, y los contenidos de FDN y FDA fueron 2.4 t ha-1, 25 g kg-1 y 24 g kg-1 respectivamente, significativamente superiores a los obtenidos en la siembra temprana. DIV, LET y LEHA fueron iguales en ambas fechas. Los tratamientos de nitrógeno no afectaron la producción y calidad del forraje. Conforme la densidad de población aumentó de 60 a 100 mil plantas/ha, la MST y LEHA incrementaron en 4.5 y 1.9 t ha-1, respectivamente, mientras que la DIV declinó en 16 g kg-1. El híbrido 'H-322E' superó a 'Halcón' en 2.4 t ha-1 de MST; sin embargo, 'Halcón' mostró mayor calidad forrajera con mayor DIV y LET, y menor contenido de fibras. La producción de LEHA fue igual con ambos híbridos, con una media de 14.4 t ha-1. Por tanto, con cualquiera de los dos híbridos y fecha de siembra, con una densidad de 100 mil plantas/ha y fertilizado con 180 kg ha-1 de nitrógeno, se obtendrá alta producción de leche por hectárea en el Valle de Aguascalientes.
