Objetivo: descrever os principais métodos de identificação de cadáveres realizados pelo odontolegista na perícia criminal, bem como discutir a importância do arquivamento de dados do protocolo do paciente, pois podem subsidiar investigações criminais. Materiais e Métodos: revisão de literatura em livro, código de ética odontológico e artigos publicados em inglês e português disponíveis na base de dados PubMed, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, Scielo e Google Acadêmico, publicados entre os anos de 2010 a 2019. Resultados: o Odontolegista é o cirurgião-dentista especializado, legalmente habilitado para a realização de exames de corpo de delito voltados principalmente à área de cabeça e pescoço, que atua em atividades clínicas e necroscópicas a serviço da justiça. Estudos apontam que 70% das identificações humanas realizadas mundialmente são feitas por esses profissionais, comprovando eficácia e fácil realização. Em virtude da resistência do elemento dentário, além dos aspectos cranianos, vários são os métodos que podem ser utilizadas na identificação de cadáveres, como através do DNA da polpa, da rugosidade palatina, determinação do sexo pelas características cranianas, histórico do prontuário, entre outras. Conclusão: é possível observar que a odontologia legal assume um papel significativo no reconhecimento post mortem, tornando a atuação desse profissional imprescindível na identificação humana. Além disso, existem inúmeros métodos de identificação de um cadáver que pode ser aplicado pela odontologia forense. Assim, é fundamental que os registros ante-mortem sejam realizados e arquivados de forma adequado, uma vez que podem subsidiar a identificação de um cadáver
