In Brazil, a severe dry season lasting for approximately 5 months and frequent fires make life difficult for cerrado insects. In certain aspects, the cerrado can be considered to be an understudied ecosystem; even basic information such as knowledge about the annual peak in abundance of different insect orders is unknown. Insect abundance patterns have only been investigated for a few groups in the cerrado region. Thus, our study concerns the temporal distribution of insect abundance in the savanna‐like vegetation of the central Brazilian cerrado (sensu stricto) in Distrito Federal. The region has a well‐defined, long dry season between May and September. The insects were sampled by window, malaise tent and pitfall traps within 1 year. We used a multiple linear regression to analyse the relationship between abundance of insects of each order and climate variables. A total of 50 127 individuals from 15 orders was collected. The orders were Coleoptera (26%), Hymenoptera (23%), Diptera (20.5%), Isoptera (20%), Homoptera (4%), Lepidoptera (4%), Orthoptera (1.5%) and Hemiptera (1%). The abundance of Diptera, Homoptera, Lepidoptera and Orthoptera was randomly distributed over time, Isoptera peaked in the first half of the wet season, Coleoptera and Hemiptera in the second half of the wet season and Hymenoptera in each season. A significant correlation was found only between Coleoptera and delayed climatic variables. There were no obvious trends that might help explain the abundance patterns observed. The study provides baseline information about phenological patterns of insect abundance and permits evaluation of this group as a resource for various food chains and different trophic levels.
Griesebach and Streptocalyx floribundus (Martius ex Schultes F.) Mez (Bromeliaceae)]. Seeds of A. nudicaulis and S. floribundus were collected in a restinga located at Presidente Kennedy (ES, Brazil). This sandy community is characterized by the presence of patches of vegetation interspersed by open areas with a sparse plant covering. In order to evaluate the capacity of A. nudicaulis and S. floribundus to recruit individuals from seeds in the distinct microclimates generated by this heterogeneous plant covering, experiments were conducted in laboratory to test the effects of light and temperature on the germination for both species. Seeds of A. nudicaulis were unable to germinate in darkness but they achieved high germinability (≥90%) from 15 to 40°C under red light. Seeds of S. floribundus germinated in darkness only at 40ºC (22.5%), whereas the germinability was high (≥90%) from 15 to 30ºC under Pinheiro & Borghetti: Light and temperature requirements for germination of seeds light. For both species, the germination rate was highest at 25ºC. For these bromeliads, alternating temperature (20/30ºC) promoted high germinability (≥92.5%) only under red light. -Coleopteran diversity was studied in three physionomies of Cerrado lato sensu in Brasília-DF: campo de murundum (1), campo sujo (2) and cerrado sensu stricto (3). In each area, insects were collected by sweep sampling on 2,000 m in each vegetation type. A total of 1,044 specimens of 155 species, distributed in 15 families were collected. The abundance varied from 1 to 441 specimens/species, with most species represented by a single specimen. We found a low faunistic similarity between areas, with high percentage of species restricted to only one area. The diversity index (Shannon -H'=1,87; H'=4,16; H'=3,17) obtained for the areas 1, 2 and 3, respectively, suggest that the species are not homogeneously distributed. The values obtained for body size (1,0 to 11,0 mm) showed most species and specimens were smaller than 5 mm.
UTILIZATION OF ETHEPHON ON HYBRID SEED PRODUCTION OF TETSUKABUTO TYPE SQUASH 1ABSTRACT -This work aimed to study the effect of ethephon in the sex expression in tetsukabuto type squash plants. The experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design, in a factorial analysis (3 x 4). The first factor was the ethephon doses (100, 200 and 300 mgL -1 ) and the second the number of weekly applications (1, 2, 3 and 4). Ethephon promoted a temporary ginoicism, reducing considerably the labor of male flower elimination in female parents. A reduction was observed in the ratio between male and female flowers and the increasing doses. In addition, female flowers tended to increase in the early nodes. Doses of 300 mgL -1 of ethephon applied three or four times was the best treatment and might be used for squash hybrid seed production.
Precipitation and air temperature numerical simulations through ETA/CPTEC - HADCM3 model in Rio de Janeiro A B S T R A C TThe present study evaluated the precipitation and air temperature simulations of the Eta-CPTEC model for Rio de Janeiro state in 1961-1990. In the simulations, a spatial resolution of 40 km was considered for a grid that comprised South America, with Eta-CPTEC initialized with HadCM3 model. The observed climatic series of the studied variables were obtained from INMET meteorological stations distributed at Rio de Janeiro state. These series were compared with those extracted from the grid points of the model near to the stations. The coefficient of determination (r²) of the simple linear regression between observed and simulated, Willmott's index of agreement (d), performance index (c), Root Mean Square Error (RQME) and their systematic (RQMEs) and unsystematic (RQMEu) components were considered in the evaluations. The precipitation simulations showed r² less than 0.32, which indicated low precision, while the accuracy (Willmott's d) was greater than 0.50, except for Bangu station. The low precision compromised the performance (index “c”) of the simulations, with 0,07 £ c £ 0,42, classified as "terrible" and "bad". The RQME varied between 76.2 and 133.4 mm, which corresponded error of 78.1 and 115.5% in relation to mean precipitation. The simulations of air temperature showed better performance than precipitation, with greater precision (0.39 £ r² £ 0.53), accuracy (0.50 £ d £ 0.79) and performance (0.36 £ c £ 0.52). The RQME was between 1.9 and 5.7oC, which represented respectively 9 and 26% for average of air temperature. In most stations, RQMEs were higher than the RQMEu, which indicated that simulators can be fitted using statistical techniques. Keywords: climate model, meteorological dataset, downscaling
