This article gives an overview of the, monitoring oriented programming framework (MOP). In MOP, runtime monitoring is supported and encouraged as a fundamental principle for building reliable systems. Monitors are automatically synthesized from specified properties and are used in conjunction with the original system to check its dynamic behaviors. When a specification is violated or validated at runtime, user-defined actions will be triggered, which can be any code, such as information logging or runtime recovery. Two instances of MOP are presented: JavaMOP (for Java programs) and BusMOP (for monitoring PCI bus traffic). The architecture of MOP is discussed, and an explanation of parametric trace monitoring and its implementation is given. A comprehensive evaluation of JavaMOP attests to its efficiency, especially in comparison with similar systems. The implementation of BusMOP is discussed in detail. In general, BusMOP imposes no runtime overhead on the system it is monitoring.

Abstract. Happen-before causal partial orders have been widely used in concurrent program verification and testing. This paper presents a parametric approach to happen-before causal partial orders. Existing variants of happen-before relations can be obtained as instances of the parametric framework. A novel causal partial order, called sliced causality, is then defined also as an instance of the parametric framework, which loosens the obvious but strict happen-before relation by considering static and dynamic dependence information about the program. Sliced causality has been implemented in a runtime predictive analysis tool for Java, named jPredictor, and the evaluation results show that sliced causality can significantly improve the capability of concurrent verification and testing.

To provide high-temperature polyimide matrix resins, novel carborane-containing thermosetting polyimides are presented. First, the low-viscosity carborane-containing imide oligomers are synthesized using newly designed 1-(3-amino-4-tolyl)-2-(4-aminophenyl)-o-carborane and aromatic dianhydride as monomers, 4-phenylethynyl phthalic anhydride as the end-capping reagent. Followed by thermal curing, the resulting polyimides show high T (≥500 °C) and above 92.1% char yield at 800 °C both in nitrogen and air atmosphere due to the incorporation of the bulky carborane cages. Aging studies, performed at 400 and 500 °C for 5 h in air on a carborane-containing polyimide and a carborane-free polyimide, show that the polyimide with carborane groups possesses excellent thermo-oxidative stability. Moreover, the novel polyimides exhibit constant and relatively low coefficient of thermal expansion values over a wide range of temperature, indicative of a remarkable dimensional stability. Thus, this study clearly demonstrates the viability of the incorporation of carborane cages to access polyimide thermosets with ultrahigh T and thermo-oxidative stability.

We present a text entry technique called HiFinger, which is an eyes-free, one-handed wearable text entry technique for immersive virtual environments by thumb-to-fingers touch. This technique enables users to input text quickly, accurately, and comfortably with the sense of touch and a two-step input mode. It is especially suitable for mobile scenarios where users need to move (such as walking) in virtual environments. Various input signals can be triggered by moving the thumb towards ultra-thin pressure sensors placed on other fingers. After acquiring the comfort range of the touch between the thumb and other fingers, six placement modes for text entry are designed and tested, resulting in an optimal placement mode that leverages six pressure sensors for the text entry and two for the control function. A three-day study is conducted to evaluate the proposed technique, and experimental results show that novices can achieve an average text entry efficiency of 9.82 words per minute (WPM) in virtual environments based on head-mounted displays after a training period of 25 min.

Recycled aggregate is aggregate prepared from construction waste. With the development of a global economy and people’s attention to sustainable development, recycled aggregate has shown advantages in replacing natural aggregate in the production of concrete due to its environmental friendliness, low energy consumption, and low cost. Recycled aggregate exhibits high water absorption and a multi-interface transition zone, which limits its application scope. Researchers have used various methods to improve the properties of recycled aggregate, such as microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) technology. In this paper, the results of recent studies on the reinforcement of recycled aggregate by MICP technology are synthesized, and the factors affecting the strengthening effect of recycled aggregate are reviewed. Moreover, the strengthening mechanism, advantages and disadvantages of MICP technology are summarized. After the modified treatment, the aggregate performance is significantly improved. Regardless of whether the aggregate was used in mortar or concrete, the mechanical properties of the specimens were clearly improved. However, there are some issues regarding the application of MICP technology, such as the use of an expensive culture medium, a long modification cycle, and untargeted mineralization deposition. These difficulties need to be overcome in the future for the industrialization of regenerated aggregate materials via MICP technology.
