O objetivo deste artigo é sugerir alguns pontos de contato entre o pensamento de G. W. Leibniz, Tomás de Aquino, e a literatura contemporânea sobre metafísica da modalidade e sobre a tese de que este seria o melhor dos mundos possíveis. Inicialmente, é discutida a importância do pensamento de G. W. Leibniz sobre modalidade para o desenvolvimento recente de uma lógica modal baseada em mundos possíveis, seguido de uma discussão introdutória da metafísica da modalidade de Leibniz e de como é possível entendê-la à luz da metafísica da modalidade contemporânea. Em seguida, apresenta-se a metafísica da modalidade de Tomás de Aquino e de como seria possível entendê-la à luz da metafísica da modalidade contemporânea. Posteriormente, apresenta-se a formulação leibniziana da ideia de que este seria o melhor dos mundos possíveis, seguida da discussão contemporânea sobre esse tópico, procurando mostrar como a literatura contemporânea pode ajudar-nos a compreender melhor a tese leibniziana. O mesmo é realizado, em seguida, em relação a Aquino.
