A “fronteira” é uma categoria de uso corrente na sociologia. O trabalho pretende discutir a utilização desta categoria em três autores “clássicos” da disciplina, buscando comparar o sentido que ela assume em suas obras e, com isso, discutir o valor heurístico das teses por eles sugeridas. Utilizando as interpretações de Max Weber, Frederick J. Turner e V. I. Lênin, trabalha-se a “fronteira” como variável decisiva na interpretação dos processos históricos de modernização na periferia do capitalismo.
O trabalho mapeia os deslocamentos da questão agrária no Brasil no período apósa redemocratização política da década de 1980, a partir do exame das controvérsiasintelectuais em torno de três macroprocessos de transformação social: a expansãodo capitalismo agrário, a emergência da agricultura familiar e os projetos dereforma agrária. Busca-se mostrar como a produção intelectual se interessa pelosprocessos socias e abre linhas de intervenção sobre eles, tornando-se ela própriaparte dos processos. Assim, o exame das controvérsias permite compreender tantotransformações na produção de conhecimento quanto em aspectos importantesda própria dinâmica social. Sustenta-se que neste período houve uma abertura denovos canais de intervenção para os intelectuais que, ao lado de outros processosde democratização política, favoreceram a emergência de imaginários alternativosàs concepções hegemônicas que, no entanto, convivem com linhas de continuidaderelativas à precedência das estruturas de grande propriedade na dinâmica dedesenvolvimento.
