This paper studied the spatial and temporal variability of the statistical structures of precipitation across Xinjiang, China, by analysing the time series of daily precipitation from 50 weather stations during the period from 1961 to 2008. Three indices precipitation concentration index (CI), precipitation concentration degree (PCD) and precipitation concentration period (PCP) were used to detect precipitation concentrations and the associated spatial patterns. The results show that higher precipitation CI values were mainly observed in Southern Xinjiang, whereas lower precipitation CI values were mostly detected in Northern Xinjiang. The precipitation CI values are noticeably larger in places where both annual total precipitation and number of rainy days are lower. The Mann-Kendall trend test demonstrates that the most parts of Xinjiang are characterized by no significant trends of precipitation CI at the 0.05 significance level. The periodicity characteristic of precipitation CI time series in Xinjiang could be detected by wavelet power spectrum analysis, and significant periods of that in most of Xinjiang were concentrated on 2-5 years band. The results of PCP reveal that rainfall in Xinjiang mostly occurs in summer, and the rainy season arrives earlier in Eastern Xinjiang than Western Xinjiang, whereas the results of PCD indicate that the rainfall in Northern Xinjiang was more dispersed within a year than that in Southern Xinjiang.

A total of 169 samples of road dust collected in the city of Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China, were analyzed by method of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry for 10 elements (i.e., Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Mn, Be, Co, Zn, and U). The possible sources of metals are identified with multivariate analysis such as correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and cluster analysis. Besides, enrichment factors are used to quantitatively evaluate the influences of human activities on heavy metal concentrations. Moreover, the potential ecological risk index is applied to evaluating the ecological risk of heavy metal pollutants. The results indicate that: (1) the concentrations of the heavy metals involved were much higher in urban areas than the background values, except those of Co and U. Mn, U, and Co are mainly of natural origin; Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cr are mainly of traffic sources and are partly of industrial sources; Ni and Be are mainly the results of industrial activities, such as machine shops, firepower plants, tire and rubber factories, cement factories, and textile mills and are partly of the traffic sources; (2) with high "toxic-response" factor and high concentration, Cd has more serious influences on the environment than other heavy metals. Therefore, commercial and industrial areas are usually characterized by higher potential ecological risk when compared with residential areas and new developing urban areas. The results of this study could be helpful for the management of environment in industrial areas.

In order to gain insight into heavy metal contamination occurring in the surface water of the Tianshan Mountains in northwest China, we collected surface water samples from there, tested heavy metals Pb, Ni, Cd, Co, Hg, As, Cu, Mn, Zn, and Cr, and then we analyzed the data using typical analysis, multivariate statistical, and pollution index methods. Results showed that (1) the order of the average values of the ten kinds of heavy metals in all the water samples was as follows: Zn > Mn > Cu > Co > Ni > Pb > Cr > As > Hg > Cd. The maximum variation coefficients of Zn and Pb were 138.96 and 145.86 %, respectively, indicating that these heavy metal concentrations varied largely between different sampling locations. (2) Research showed the average concentrations of Pb, Cd, As, Cu, Zn, and Cr were all within the national surface water standard of class IV and those of As, Cu, Mn, and Cr were all within the range of the Drinking Water Guidelines from the WHO, indicating the surface water of the Tianshan Mountains is clean. (3) Multivariate statistical analysis showed that Cu, Cd, Mn, Hg, Zn, and Pb have close correlations, and they mainly came from artificial sources; while Ni, As, Co, Cu, and Cr mainly came from natural sources. The results of correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and cluster analysis are consistent. (4) Pollution evaluation showed the values of comprehensive pollution index (WQI) of ten kinds of heavy metals in three sections were all lower than 2, suggesting the low levels of pollution, while the over-limit ratios of Pb and Zn in water samples of the middle Urumqi-Akesu section, As in the western Zhaosu-Tekesi section, and Pb, Hg, and Zn in the eastern Balikun-Yiwu section were all above 10 %. This research shows that recent economic development of the Tianshan Mountains has negatively influenced the heavy metal concentrations in the surface water, although the concentrations of the ten kinds of tested heavy metals are relatively low.
