Die Zahl der hieriiber angestellten Untersuchungen ist ausserst gering and ihre Ergebnisse widersprechen sich in der krassesten Weise .Es ist jedoch nicht schwer einzusehen, warum wir es gerade hier mit einem weitgehend vernachlassigten Forschungsgebiet zu tun haben : Wahrend unter normalen Bedingungen in der Luft 0,032 CO2 vorhanden sind, beteiligt sich der Sauerstoff zu 21 % an der Zusammensetzung der Luft, iibertrifft mengenmassig also das Kohlendioxyd fast um drei Zehnerpotenzen .So steht der Sauerstoff den Vegetationsorganen der Landpflanzen in optimaler Menge zur Verfugung . Dies gilt auch dann, wenn sie -wie in Dunkelperioden -selbst keinen Sauerstoff produzieren . Nur im Inneren voluminoser Organe, wo ein langer Diffusionsweg die Sauerstoffzufuhr erschwert, konnen starke Schwankungen auftreten . Auch im Bereich der Wurzeln herrscht oft Sauerstoffmangel . Die Auslesewirkung, welche hier der Sauerstoff auf dem Wege fiber die Wurzelatmung -namentlich in nassen Boden -in Pflanzengesellschaften ausi bt, ist in der Geobotanik lange bekannt .
