The study showed that there is great potential for healing and bone formation in the maxillary sinus without the use of additional bone grafts or bone substitutes. The secluded compartment created by the elevated sinus membrane, implants, and replaceable bone window allowed bone formation according to the principle of guided tissue regeneration. The precise mechanisms are not known, and further histologic studies are needed. Sinus membrane elevation without the use of additional graft material was found to be a predictable technique for bone augmentation of the maxillary sinus floor.

Treatment with PDT in patients with periimplantitis was not associated with major reduction of total anaerobic bacteria on the rough surfaces of dental implants as compared with surgical therapy. A significantly lower proinflammatory index of periimplantitis was observed in the PDT group at 24 weeks of follow-up.
The CSR of 96% at 1 year indicates that immediate function of Brånemark System implants placed in incisor to premolar regions in both jaws is a viable concept. More failures occurred with single-tooth replacements (6.3%) than with splinted implants (1.9%).
The findings of this 12-month prospective cohort study showed that immediate transmucosal implant placement represented a predictable treatment option for the replacement of mandibular and maxillary molars lost due to reasons other than periodontitis including vertical root fractures, endodontic failures and caries.
The study indicated that it was important to carefully perform surgery in posterior mandibles in order to preserve and optimally use the existing dense bone. It was suggested that from bone healing and remodeling aspects, posterior mandibles may be more demanding to handle than corresponding areas of maxillae.
The peri-implant bone level change and number of biological complications that took place during the 5 years was small and unrelated to the surgical protocol used for implant placement.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
