The forest stock volume (FSV) is one of the key indicators in forestry resource assessments on local, regional, and national scales. To date, scaling up in situ plot-scale measurements across landscapes is still a great challenge in the estimation of FSVs. In this study, Sentinel-2 imagery, the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform, three base station joint differential positioning technology (TBSJDPT), and three algorithms were used to build an FSV model for forests located in Hunan Province, southern China. The GEE cloud computing platform was used to extract the imagery variables from the Sentinel-2 imagery pixels. The TBSJDPT was put forward and used to provide high-precision positions of the sample plot data. The random forests (RF), support vector regression (SVR), and multiple linear regression (MLR) algorithms were used to estimate the FSV. For each pixel, 24 variables were extracted from the Sentinel-2 images taken in 2017 and 2018. The RF model performed the best in both the training phase (i.e., R 2 = 0.91, RMSE = 35.13 m 3 ha −1 , n = 321) and in the test phase (i.e., R 2 = 0.58, RMSE = 65.03 m 3 ha −1 , and n = 138). This model was followed by the SVR model (R 2 = 0.54, RMSE = 65.60 m 3 ha −1 , n = 321 in training; R 2 = 0.54, RMSE = 66.00 m 3 ha −1 , n = 138 in testing), which was slightly better than the MLR model (R 2 = 0.38, RMSE = 75.74 m 3 ha −1 , and n = 321 in training; R 2 = 0.49, RMSE = 70.22 m 3 ha −1 , and n = 138 in testing) in both the training phase and test phase. The best predictive band was Red-Edge 1 (B5), which performed well both in the machine learning methods and in the MLR method. The Blue band (B2), Green band (B3), Red band (B4), SWIR2 band (B12), and vegetation indices (TCW, NDVI_B5, and TCB) were used in the machine learning models, and only one vegetation index (MSI) was used in the MLR model. We mapped the FSV distribution in Hunan Province (3.50 × 10 8 m 3 ) based on the RF model; it reached a total accuracy of 63.87% compared with the official forest report in 2017 (5.48 × 10 8 m 3 ). Accurate individual tree segmentation (ITS) is fundamental to forest management and to the studies of forest ecosystem. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Light Detection and Ranging (UAV-LiDAR) shows advantages for ITS and tree height estimation at stand and landscape scale. However, dense deciduous forests with tightly interlocked tree crowns challenge the performance for ITS. Available LiDAR points through tree crown and appropriate algorithm are expected to attack the problem. In this study, a new UAV-LiDAR dataset that fused leaf-off and leaf-on point cloud (FULD) was introduced to assess the synergetic benefits for ITS and tree height estimation by comparing different types of segmentation algorithms (i.e., watershed segmentation, point cloud segmentation and layer stacking segmentation) in the dense deciduous forests of Northeast China. Field validation was conducted in the four typical stands, including mixed broadleaved forest (MBF), Mongolian oak forest (MOF), mixed broadleaf-conifer forest (MBCF) and larch plantation forest (LPF). The results showed that the combination of FULD and the layer stacking segmentation (LSS) algorithm produced the highest accuracies across all forest types (F-score: 0.70 to 0.85). The FULD also showed a better performance on tree height estimation, with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.54 m at individual level. Compared with using the leaf-on dataset solely, the RMSE of tree height estimation was reduced by 0.22 to 0.27 m, and 12.3% more trees were correctly segmented by the FULD, which are mainly contributed by improved detection rate at nearly all DBH levels and by improved detection accuracy at low DBH levels. The improvements are attributed to abundant points from the bole to the treetop of FULD, as well as each layer point being included for segmentation by LSS algorithm. These findings provide useful insights to guide the application of FULD when more multi-temporal LiDAR data are available in future.

The use of satellite-borne large-footprint LiDAR (light detection and ranging) systems allows for the acquisition of forest monitoring data. This paper mainly describes the design, use, operating principles, installation and data properties of the new Laser Vegetation Detecting Sensor (LVDS), a LiDAR system designed and developed at the Academy of Forest Inventory and Planning (AFIP) and the Beijing Institute of Telemetry (BIT). Data from LVDS were used to calculate the mean height of forest trees on sample plots using data collected in the Hunan province of China. The results show that the full waveform data obtained by LVDS has the ability to accurately characterize forest height. The mean absolute percentage error of mean forest height per plot in flat areas was 6.8%, with a mean absolute deviation of 0.78 m. The airborne LVDS system provides prototype data sets and a platform for instrument proof-of-concept studies for China’s Terrestrial Ecosystem Carbon Monitoring (TECM) mission, which is an Earth remote sensing satellite due for launch in 2020. The information produced by LVDS allows for forest structure studies with high accuracy and coverage of large areas.

Digital aerial photogrammetry (DAP) has emerged as an alternative to airborne laser scanning (ALS) for forest inventory applications, as it offers a low-cost and flexible three-dimensional (3D) point cloud. Unlike the forest inventory attributes (e.g., tree height and diameter at breast height), the relative ability of DAP and ALS in predicting canopy structural variables (i.e., canopy cover and leaf area index (LAI)) has not been sufficiently investigated by previous studies. In this study, we comprehensively compared the canopy cover and LAI estimates using DAP- and ALS-based methods over 166 selected tropical forest sample plots with seven different tree species and forest types. We also explored the relationship between field-measured aboveground biomass (AGB) and the LAI estimates. The airborne LAI estimates were subsequently compared with the Sentinel-2-based LAI values that were retrieved using a one-dimensional radiative transfer model. The results demonstrated that the DAP-based method generally overestimated the two canopy variables compared to ALS-based methods but with relatively high correlations regardless of forest type and species (R2 of 0.80 for canopy cover and R2 of 0.76 for LAI). Under different forest types and species, the R2 of canopy cover and LAI range from 0.64 to 0.89 and from 0.54 to 0.87, respectively. Apparently, different correlations between AGB and LAI were found for different forest types and species where the mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest shows the best correlation with R2 larger than 0.70 for both methods. The comparison with satellite retrievals verified that the ALS-based estimates are more consistent with Sentinel-2-based estimates than DAP-based estimates. We concluded that DAP data failed to provide analogous results to ALS data for canopy variable estimation in tropical forests.

Forest aboveground biomass (AGB) is an important indicator for characterizing forest ecosystem structures and functions. Therefore, how to effectively investigate forest AGB is a vital mission. Airborne laser scanning (ALS) has been demonstrated as an effective way to support investigation and operational applications among a wide range of applications in the forest inventory. Moreover, three-dimensional structure information relating to AGB can be acquired by airborne laser scanning. Many studies estimated AGB from variables that were extracted from point cloud data, but few of them took full advantage of variables related to tree crowns to estimate the AGB. In this study, the main objective was to evaluate and compare the capabilities of different metrics derived from point clouds obtained from ALS. Particularly, individual tree-based alpha-shape, along with other traditional and commonly used plot-level height and intensity metrics, have been used from airborne laser scanning data. We took the random forest and multiple stepwise linear regression to estimate the AGB. By comparing AGB estimates with field measurements, our results showed that the best approach is mixed metrics, and the best estimation model is random forest (R2 = 0.713, RMSE = 21.064 t/ha, MAE = 15.445 t/ha), which indicates that alpha-shape may be a good alternative method to improve AGB estimation accuracy. This method provides an effective solution for estimating aboveground biomass from airborne laser scanning.
