English persuasive writing is an important skill to be mastered by students as it is highly valued when and if students continue their studies to a higher education level. The objectives of this study are to: (1) identify the distinctive features of persuasive essays commonly adopted by Malaysian students; (2) investigate the problems students encounter while developing their arguments, and (3) to suggest strategies that can improve students’ persuasive writing skills. Seventy-nine essay samples from four secondary schools were selected for the analysis and Toulmin’s Model was employed as the tool for analyzing the essays. The focus of the analysis is to uncover the persuasive elements that the students have applied in their writing. The raw data were gathered by reading each of the essays and labeling the persuasive elements (claim, grounds, warrant, backing, rebuttal and qualifiers) which were identified. Findings from the analysis have indicated that the students applied the basic persuasive elements: claim, grounds and warrant. It was also discovered that the students lacked the optional persuasive elements; qualifier, rebuttal and backing. Students need to be exposed to new or alternative strategies of composing in order to help improve their persuasive writing skills.
Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengenal pasti tahap Pengetahuan Pembelajaran, Pendekatan Pembelajaran dan Pengetahuan Pembelajaran dan Prestasi Pelajar Ekonomi STPM di negeri Sabah. Prestasi pelajar Ekonomi merujuk terhadap perubahan positif dalam hal kecekapan tingkah laku atau kemampuan yang dapat meningkatkan penambahbaikan dalam diri untuk mencapai sesuatu matlamat dalam diri melalui pembentukan diri yang positif khususnya dalam keupayaan pembangunan pelajar secara produktif melalui sikap, pengetahuan dan pembelajaran. Daripada analisis data, didapati tahap pengetahuan pembelajaran berada pada tahap tinggi, sikap pembelajaran, pendekatan pembelajaran serta prestasi pelajar ekonomi berada pada tahap sederhana tinggi. Sehubungan itu, implikasi kajian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan keupayaan pembangunan prestasi pelajar Ekonomi STPM di negeri Sabah dalam membentuk pelajar ke arah yang lebih positif dari segi sikap, pengetahuan dan pendekatan pembelajaran dan Seterusnya ke alam pekerjaan.
Kajian ini bertujuan mengenal pasti tahap sikap pengajaran, pengetahuan pengajaran dan kemahiran pengajaran terhadap kendiri pengajaran guru sekolah menengah di negeri Sabah. Reka bentuk kajian adalah berbentuk deskriptif, menggunakan kaedah tinjauan. Soal selidik telah digunakan untuk mendapatkan data kuantitatif melibatkan seramai 150 guru sekolah menengah di negeri Sabah sebagai responden. Data kajian telah dianalisis secara deskriptif (min, peratus dan kekerapan). Implikasi daripada kajian ini, mencadangkan bahawa kendiri pengajaran guru sekolah menengah perlu sentiasa dipertingkatkan dan ditambah baik dan perlu mengambil kira faktor sikap, pengetahuan dan kemahiran yang memberi kesan secara tidak langsung terhadap kendiri guru sekolah menengah di negeri Sabah.
