Contaminated water/soil by heavy metal ions has become a critical global issue, and caused severe health risk to humans. As comparation with nanofiltration, ion exchange and reverse osmosis, adsorption strategy is more appropriate application in large-scale with advantages of convenient, affordable and efficient. Therefore, it is urgent to explore the excellent adsorbents with high-performance, low cost and long-term stability. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), also known as anionic clays, have attracted extensively attention in the field of adsorption due to its special chemical and physical properties. Especially as amendment for in-situ remediation soil, LDHs have displayed excellent performance to immobilize the heavy meatal ions through anchoring those contaminants into the framework of LDHs. Here we review the development of LDHs as amendment for the water and soil contaminated by heavy metal ions, analyzing the removal mechanism in adsorption process, and proposed some options, which is expected to provide useful suggestions in the fabrication of adsorbent contained-LDHs with excellent performance for removal of heavy metal ions.
