La société touarègue n'est pas en vase clos, elle côtoie de très près d'autres populations et d'autres cultures, elle s'adapte à son nouvel univers dans ses différentes composantes. Nous avons donc délimité un espace lieu représentatif de cette brusque évolution de cette société, à savoir l'espace périphérique qui entoure la ville de Tamanrasset où s'est sédentarisé un grand nombre de nomades Touaregs. C'est un espace d'échange et de conflits, espace de toutes les transgressions où réside la majorité des officiants. Ces acteurs, femmes ou hommes, intermédiaires entre les deux mondes du visible et de l'invisiblesont de ce fait dans la modernité et dans l'échange mais aussi dans le conflit. Cet espace délimite une « topographie » de l'espace religieux thérapeutique. Nous avons aussi enquêté dans d'autres espaces témoins, ce sont les villages semi-sédentaires et quelques rares campements, qui demeurent des lieux de vie et témoignent encore du maintien, par les femmes essentiellement, d'un certain mode de vie nomade, d'un autre rapport à l'espace, et d'une tradition enrichie elle-même de nouveaux apports culturels. Dans ces lieux se célèbrent encore les principaux rites de passages (naissance, mariage, mort) qui rythment la vie des Touaregs, et dont nous allons parler.
