The teaching of Islam has warned and reminded Muslim society regarding the threat of superstitious practices after the period of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Various distorted beliefs, such as shamanism and fortune-telling, have simultaneously spread all over the Muslim world including Malaysia. Among several causal of heretical innovation of distorted belief is ignorance and lack of religious knowledge. This article higlights contributing factors of Malays' involvement in superstitious practices which stresses on their perception, beliefs and practices. The writing of this article is based on the study conducted through qualitative methods using observation and interview. Selected key informants from religious affairs departments and political leadership are selected as respondents of the study. The result found that lack of religious education, ignorance, the influence of shamanism and strong belief in mystic and magic are accepted to contribute to the occurence of superstitious practices. These causal factors need to be addressed in the very best possible manner by the Islamic affairs authorities in order to prevent futher society involvement.
Abstract Information and Communication Technology (ICT) awareness campaign has been launched by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed on October 11, 1997 aims to ensure that all Malaysians can take advantage of its technology. As a result, ICT is now extensively applied in various fields of life. This article aims to examine the issue of the use of new media as a medium of religious learning and the proposed solution due to problems from its use in accordance with Islamic perspective. Current developments indicate that ICT users are increasingly close to new media and its use has been stretched to the debate on religion and its need in daily life. However, new media has pros and cons effect on its users especially in terms of its content, resources and several other features as social media. Hence, the use of social media to spread religios information and various activities in the process of transforming online dakwah from users’ view and its solution from Islamic perspective will be discussed in more detail in this paper. The results of this study can serve as a basic guide by the Muslim missionaries and communities in receiving and using online information as a medium of religious teaching and learning. Malaysian Well-Being Index (MyWI) which was introduced in 2013 and Malaysian Well-Being Report portray the determination of the government in the issue of people"s well-being regardless of their races. The Malaysian Well-being Report 2013 by the Economic Planning Unit shows that the people"s well-being has increased significantly. Several well-being indexes in Malaysia include the Malaysian Well-Being Index (MyWI), Family Well-Being Index (IKK), Malaysia Youth Index and Malaysian Syariah Index were used to measure the people"s well-being from various dimensions and consist of different and separate indicators. In this research, five indicators were utilized; 1. Religion and beliefs indicator; 2. Life necessities indicator; 3. Social issues indicator; 4. Social chance or social mobility indicator; and 5. Political and stability indicator. This research serves the purpose of identifying suitable social well-being themes thus analysing the social well-being indicators in Malaysia. Data were collected through structured interview technique using questionnaire and unstructured interviews. Respondents consist of government civil servants and private sector workers as well as T20, M40 and B40 community groups. This research was conducted in 4 zones throughout Malaysia namely North Zone, West/Middle Zone, East Zone and East Malaysia Zone. This survey research uses mixed-methodology technique, that is a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods. A total of 419 respondents participated in the questionnaire and 15 informants were involved in unstructured interviews. Finding reveals that religion and beliefs is the most relevant element to be used as an indicator of social well-being among the society.
