Quando tratamos de água para consumo humano, fala-se água potável, de acordo e em conformidade com os padrões de potabilidade estabelecidos pela Portaria 518/2004 do Ministério da Saúde, seja ela proveniente dos sistemas de abastecimentos ou de uma solução alternativa de abastecimento. O estudo tem objetivo verificar a qualidade da água fornecida para consumo humano pelo abastecimento alternativo na cidade de Quixadá: os carroceiros pipas e a água captada das chuvas e armazenada em cisternas domiciliares. Utilizou-se uma abordagem analítica, transversal, quantitativa e prospectiva. Foram coletadas e analisadas quatro amostras de água armazenada em cisternas domiciliares e quatro amostras de água fornecidas pelos carroceiros pipas a população para consumo. Das amostras coletadas, observou-se que os padrões físico-químicos não se apresentaram anormais, enquanto a presença de contaminantes microbiológicos foi positiva para todas as amostras. Diante da problemática, vale ressaltar a importância do tratamento químico com a adição de um agente de desinfecção, para a eliminação dos microorganismos presentes na água.
