The objective of this clinical case study is to describe the first clinical case of an intracranial sewing needle identified in veterinary medicine and to describe the second case of intracranial foreign body secondary to pharyngeal perforation. A one-year-old Maltese dog with acute haemorrhagical vomiting and seizure was evaluated. A cerebral CT scan revealed the presence of a sewing needle inserted into the nasopharynx, which perforated the caudal cranial fossa through the brainstem, cerebellum and caudal part of the forebrain. An emergency surgery was performed, the needle was removed and the dog recovered well during the following 72 hours. One month after the surgery, the dog was still fine. This clinical case reinforces the possibility of cranial perforation after sharp foreign body ingestion. Intracranial foreign body should be part of the differential diagnosis in dogs when acute digestive signs are associated with acute neurological complications.

Objective To evaluate/ determine the risk factors for dogs presented with Gastric Dilation- Volvulus (GDV) to a referral veterinary centre and to compare the results with those currently reported in veterinary literature. Materials and Methods The observational case-control study comprised a population of 215 dogs that attended the referral centre between 2000 and 2018. Medical records were searched for GDV and those matching the criteria were manually reviewed. A questionnaire was completed by the owners of the dogs involved in the study (both case and control populations) in order to gain further information that could be considered relevant to GDVs. In particular, information included the dogs’ behaviour and the dogs daily activities. Results The study included 115 cases of GDV and 115 controls. Out of the GDV dogs 13% (15/115) were small breed dogs and the remaining 87% (100/115) either large or giant breeds. The following risk factors for developing a GDV have been identified: Purebred dogs over 3 years old and either large of giant breeds, weighing > 30 kg. Foreign body ingestion, diarrhoea, and grass consumption were also associated to increase the likelihood in developing GDV. Behavioural temperament was not associated with developing GDV. Clinical Significance The findings support previously identified risk factors in the development of GDV, but characteristics related to the dogs temperament warrant further investigation. Knowledge of these results will further allow clinicians to make evidence‐based recommendations to owners in attempting to prevent GDV in dogs. Furthermore this paper confirms that the risk of GDV in certain breeds and in certain conditions is always high and that GDV is still an extremely current disease.

Aim of the Research The aim of this study is to analyze a group of dogs of different breeds affected by osteosarcoma (OSA), to document any prevalence of this primary bone neoplasia in breeds that are phylogenetically close and to help with further research human medicine, as a model of study for prevalence and epidemiology of human OSA in multiple populations. Study Design Pilot study from two canine surgery databases between 2002 and 2013. Materials and Methods Breeds were classified in groups based on their phylogenetical proximity. Differences in prevalence of OSA between breeds and groups were evaluated with a permutation test. For each breed and each group, a ranking was made by calculating 95 % confidence intervals and counting the no-overlapping between breeds and groups. The relation between the dogs’ heights and the prevalence of OSA was analyzed using a logistic regression between the disease status and dog size. Results A total of 67 dogs with OSA, in 26 different breeds were included. Ten breeds were overrepresented and, the majority of these, were classified in 2 predisposed groups phylogenetically close to each other. The prevalence of OSA was associated with the dogs’ height within predisposed breeds, but, in general, taller breeds were not the most affected. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance In this study, despite the small number of dogs, we observed that the most commonly affected breeds with OSA are phylogenetically closely related. This highlights the importance of genetics in the aetiology of canine OSA . In this preliminary study, indications are given on breeds, samples and genome locations to be further investigated. This could allow identification of pathogenic alleles in dogs, and potentially in humans. Furthermore this pilot research can represent a model of epidemiologic study of human OSA.

This case report aimed to describe a surgical technique combining a secured pin intermandibular ventral epoxy resin (SPIVER) frame and an acetabular plate to manage a complex mandibular fracture configuration in a puppy. A four-month-old, entire male, German wirehaired pointer was referred for assessment of a combination of recent (three days before hospitalisation) and older traumatic (45 days before hospitalisation) facial injuries inflicted by the dam. CT revealed multiple mandibular and maxillary fractures with complex acute mandibular fractures requiring surgical stabilisation. wo techniques were combined on stabilisation of the mandible: a single acetabular plate 2.7 to repair the mandibular angle fracture and a SPIVER frame to repair the comminuted mandibular fracture. Both fractures healed uneventfully, and the dog had normal jaw function one year postoperatively. Occlusion was not modified compared with the preoperative condition, considering that the patient already had a malocclusion defect due to old lesions. The combination of two different osteosynthesis techniques had satisfactory short-term and long-term outcomes in this puppy.

Whether surgical palliative therapy is appropriate for oncologic veterinary patients is an increasing concern as pet age increases because of improved care. In this study, an online survey (available for 30 days), comprising 100 questions with structured response options, was administered to 492 diplomates of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS). The survey queried the technical, ethical, social, medical, and financial aspects of surgical palliative therapy for oncologic veterinary patients.Responses were received from 155 ECVS diplomates (31.5%, n = 155/492). Palliative surgery was a relatively common intervention in veterinary oncology, with 50% of respondents (n = 77.5/155) indicating that 75%-100% of oncological surgeries performed were palliative. The presence of metastasis was judged as a key determinant when deciding to perform palliative oncological surgery by 41% of the respondents (n = 63.5/155). The survey revealed that the most commonly performed procedures in palliative oncological surgery were marginal resection, debulking, and amputation. In contrast to human medicine, palliative limb-sparing surgery, stent placement, and embolization were rarely used in veterinary settings, mainly because of a general lack of expertise among veterinarians, elevated costs, and recourse to euthanasia. Taken together, the survey results highlight the need for appropriate guidelines in the field of oncological surgery. To establish general guidelines and direct veterinarians towards the most appropriate judgement, understanding how and what veterinary surgeons manage palliative oncological surgery and how they perceive the main ethical, social, medical, and financial concerns are essential. Such guidelines will lead to better care for ailing animals and will facilitate the path to healing for owners.

A 4-year-old, European, male neutered cat was admitted to the emergency service showing symptoms of dyspnoea and lethargy. Radiographs and echocardiography confirmed a pericardial effusion. Fluid analysis obtained via thoracocentesis showed evidence of bacteria in the pericardial space. The species of bacteria was Neisseria animaloris. Subtotal pericardiectomy through sternotomy was the treatment of choice in this case to perform a surgical lavage and the placement of a thoracic drain in order to decrease the pericardial pressure. Sterile samples were taken during the surgery. The cat was discharged 6 days after admission, with oral antibiotic treatment (amoxicillin/clavulanic acid) and was free of clinical signs at discharge.
