Ce volume rassemble les interventions qui ont eu lieu pendant un symposium de deux jours (du 12 au 13 novembre 2011) à la Princeton University, consacré au « Sortilege in Late Antiquity » L'ouvrage s'articule en quatorze chapitres thématiquement organisés. Les sujets analysés dans ce volume collectif embrassent cinq points principaux : l'étude des instruments divinatoires (William E. Klingshirn) ; l'analyse des différentes pratiques (la palmomancie, Salvatore Costanza ; la bibliomancie, Kevin Wilkinson, Jeff W. Childers ; l'homéromancie, Michael Meerson ; les Sortes Biblicae Judaicae, Peter W. van der Horst) ; les Sortes Barberinianae, Randall Stewart), les contextes sociaux où les consultations avaient lieu ainsi que le statut de leur praticiens (Alexander Kocar, David Frankfurter) ; les aspects légaux et économiques (Franziska Naether, David M. Ratzan), et enfin le point de vu des chrétiens vis-à-vis des sortes (Laura Salah Nasrallah, Anne-Marie Luijendijk). 2 L'introduction, rédigée par W.E. Klingshirn et A.-M. Luijendijk, présente dans une première partie les tenants de la cléromancie, c'est-à-dire le procédé divinatoire qui a recours à l'utilisation de n'importe quel objet capable de donner un résultat d'égale probabilité. Par l'emploi de ces générateurs de hasard (dés, astragales, ouverture casuelle d'un livre sacré…) se manifeste la volonté divine, qui assure la vérité de la consultation. La force du divin réside dans le fait qu'il détient les clefs interprétatives.
