Contributions from Afro-descendant peoples have been hugely important in the formation of Brazilian culture. These peoples are partly represented by remnant quilombo communities, which maintain their habits and knowledge about the use and management of plant resources. This research aimed to inventory the medicinal plants used, and to measure the cultural salience of these plants in the Casinhas community of the Jeremoabo municipality, in the state of Bahia (which is situated in a caatinga region). For data collection, we conducted semi-structured interviews with seven people recognized by the community as having the most knowledge about plants. The results indicate that 87 species are used in traditional local medicine, with an emphasis on Poincianella pyramidalis (catingueira), which had the greatest citation frequency and the greatest salience. Diseases of the digestive system had the most plant indications (21 species), leaves (36%) and bark (30%) were the plant parts most often cited for therapeutic use, and tea was the most frequently indicated mode of use (49%). The studied community depends directly on plant resources for their curing practices. The results of this research may serve as a basis for bioprospecting and may also be of benefit in the selection of priority caatinga species for future s...
Introduction: Since muscle injuries trigger inflammatory processes and inflammation generates heat due to increased local metabolism, hence the level of inflammation can be measured by the temperature gradient. Objective: To assess the feasibility of application of thermography in the diagnosis of injuries caused by physical training. Methods: The study was conducted with adolescent athletes of the Paraná Club, Curitiba, Brazil, who were divided into two groups, namely control and experimental. The control group attended a training session of low intensity and the experimental group a high intensity one. First, a thermographic image of the quadriceps of each athlete was acquired before the training session. After the training session, a blood sample was collected to check the level of serum lactate of each athlete. Subsequently, 24 hours after training, an extra blood sample was performed to check the level of serum CK of each athlete. Another individual thermographic image of the quadriceps was acquired at that stage. Results: The correlation between the lactate and CK was positive and statistically significant rho value = 0.661 (p = 0.038). There was no statistically significant correlation between CK values 24 h post-training and the change in temperature (24 h post-training -pre-training) in the muscles evaluated for the control group. There was a statistically significant difference in temperature (24 h post-training -pre-training) (p<0.05) for the three muscles studied only in the experimental group. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest the possibility of use of thermographic images, together with creatine kinase, in order to determine the intensity and location of post-training muscle damage, since the previously mentioned biochemical marker cannot determine the anatomic location of the muscle injury.
Rustic coffee plantations are characterised by the use of numerous wild and cultivated tree species for providing shade to the coffee shrubs. This paper analyses the role of these plantations in wild tree conservation through the examination of their patterns of floristic variation in southern Mexico. The studied plantations included a total of 45 plant species, most of which were wild tree species, including both mature forest and pioneer taxa. An extrapolation of the species accumulation curve among stands indicated that the whole system, composed of more than 100 coffee plantations, may harbour as many as 34 species of wild trees. The floristic structure of rustic coffee plantations was highly variable. This variation is a result of a combination of factors such as human management, original stand cover and the asynchrony in development stage of different plantations. This promotes a large b-diversity in the system. Thus, although a single plantation may have a limited potential to preserve wild tree species, it is the whole ensemble of floristically heterogeneous plantations which renders this agroforestry system valuable for plant diversity conservation, particularly in a region where native forest vegetation has almost disappeared.
In this commentary on Brayboy and Castagno's paper, published in this volume, we discuss, on the one hand, many points of agreement between their proposal of culturally responsive schooling for indigenous youth and El-Hani and Mortimer's proposal of culturally-sensitive science education. On the other hand, we focus on a key disagreement, not only with Brayboy and Castagno, but with a whole body of literature on multicultural, postcolonialist, postmodernist education. The main point of disagreement lies in the fact that we are not sure that to broaden the concept of science so as to talk about ''native science'' or ''indigenous science'' is indeed the best strategy to attain a goal that we wholeheartedly share with Brayboy and Castagno, to value other ways of knowing for their own sake, validity, and legitimacy.
Correspondência:Eduardo Borba Neves. Rua Marquês do Paraná 418, apto 104, Água Verde.80620-210 -Curitiba, PR, Brasil.
The present study aimed to determine the correlations among the arm subcutaneous fat percentage (SFP), arm muscle cross-sectional area (MCSA), arm total cross-sectional area (TCSA), and the difference between core temperature and skin temperature in biceps and triceps areas, measured using thermography. This research focused on a cross-sectional study using a quantitative approach with participants consisting of young, untrained volunteers from the city of Curitiba, Brazil. The total sample size was 20 volunteers including 13 males and 7 females. A statistical correlation between MSCA and core and skin ∆ temperature for the right and left biceps (r =-0.487, p = 0.030 / r =-0.518, p = 0.019), and also between TCSA core and skin ∆ temperature for the right and left biceps (r =-0.513, p = 0.021 / r =-0.554, p = 0.011) was identified. These results confirmed that arm muscle cross-sectional area influenced skin temperature at the biceps region. This result can also be generalized to other areas of the skin, which show similar characteristics to the studied area.
