Leptospirosis is a worldwide anthropozoonosis that infects livestock, including sheep as the carriers to other animals and humans. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of Leptospira spp. in sheep from two slaughterhouses in the state of São Paulo, Brazil and its association with epidemiological variables. Serum samples from 182 sheep were evaluated for Leptospira spp. antibodies by microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Results indicated 34/182 (18.68%; CI95% 13.70-24.98%) positive serum samples, mainly to the serovar Copenhageni (17/34; 50%; CI95% 33.99-66.01%). Bacterial growth in the Fletcher medium was detected for 13/34 (38.24%; CI95% 23.87-55.08%) animals, and confirmed by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and sequencing for only two kidney samples from two animals. Thus, treatment and vaccination of sheep, besides rodent control, can be useful to prevent the infection in the studied region since sheep are important Leptospira spp. carriers, and its transmission to slaughterhouse workers is mainly through the manipulation of visceral tissues.

Introduction: Leptospira interrogans swine infection is a cause of serious economic loss and a potential human health hazard. In Brazil, the most common serovars associated with swine infections are Pomona, Icterohaemorrhagie and Tarassovi. Cross-reactions among serovars and the failure of infected animals to seroconvert may complicate the interpretation of serological tests. Molecular methods with better discriminatory powers are useful tools for swine leptospirosis characterization and diagnosis. Methodology: This study evaluated nine L. interrogans isolates from the States of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais during different time periods.Isolates from diseased and apparently healthy swine were characterized by microscopic agglutination tests with polyclonal antibodies and were genotyped by VNTR, PFGE and MLST techniques. Broth microdilution was used to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration of the antimicrobials of veterinary interest. Results: The strains were identified as L. interrogans serogroup Pomona serovar Pomona Genotype A, while MLST grouped all of the isolates in sequence type 37. The PFGE analysis resulted in two pulsotypes with more than 70% similarity, distinguishing serovar Pomona isolates from the serovar Kennewicki reference strain. All of the isolates presented low MIC values to penicillin, ampicillin, ceftiofur and tulathromycin. High MIC values for fluoroquinolones, tiamulin, gentamicin, tetracyclines, neomycin, tilmicosin and sulfas were also observed. Conclusions: All molecular techniques were concordant in L. interrogans serovar Pomona identification. This serovar may have a different antibiotic susceptibility profile than previously reported for Leptospira isolates.

Investigou-se, soroepidemiologicamente, a leptospirose em 775 cães do município de Botucatu - SP, em amostras de sangue, obtidas durante a campanha anual de vacinação anti-rábica, coletadas de 14 postos de vacinação, distribuídos geograficamente, representando o total de 45 postos de cinco regiões do Município, com uma área territorial urbana de 31km². Do total de amostras, 449 eram de machos, e 326, de fêmeas; 564 eram de animais sem raça definida, e 211, puros. As idades variavam de três meses a 20 anos. Para o diagnóstico, foi realizada a soroaglutinação microscópica, utilizando-se 12 sorovares de Leptospira spp. A comparação entre o resultado do exame sorológico e as variáveis epidemiológicas foi realizada pelos testes de Goodman e do Qui-quadrado, coma= 0,05. Obtiveram-se 119 (15,3%) amostras positivas, com reação para 11 sorovares, com maior importância para o canicola, em 48 (40,3%) amostras, e pyrogenes, em 41 (34,5%). Pela análise estatística, encontrou-se diferença significativa em relação à raça - positividade em 17,7% dos animais sem raça definida e em 9,0% dos demais - e sexo - positividade em 18,4% de machos e 11,0% de fêmeas. Quanto à idade, não houve diferença significativa, com distribuição uniforme entre as faixas etárias estabelecidas.
