Gain scheduling consists in interpolating linear and time invariant (LTI) controllers' parameters designed for different operating conditions, in order to provide a satisfactory performance for all the relevant operating range of a non linear system. The resulting controller is known as Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV). In this work, the Virtual Reference Feedback Tuning (VRFT) method -originally proposed for the design of LTI controllers -is employed to design LPV controllers through a unique optimization procedure, without performing the interpolation step. A particular structure for the controller is presented, in a way that the LPV controller designed through VRFT is equivalent to a gain scheduling controller. We compare the closed-loop response of a non linear system with the proposed LPV controller, with a gain scheduling controller obtained through interpolation of LTI controllers, as well as with an LTI controller.
