This study evaluated the cicatrizant effect of an ointment containing 1% of the ethyl-acetate fraction extracted from the stem bark of "barbatimão" (Stryphnodendron adstringens), in wounds made in the skin of rats, after 4, 7 and 10 days of treatment. Control wounds were treated with a base ointment without extract. The proliferation of keratinocytes in the area of reepithelialization was evaluated by counting the number of epithelial cells that were blocked in metaphase by vincristine sulfate. The length of the reepithelialized margin and the contraction of the wound were measured. Topical application of the "barbatimão" ointment stimulated proliferation of the keratinocytes, but had no effect on the length of the epithelium or on the contraction of the wounds. Reepithelialization. INTRODUCTIONIn cutaneous lesions, tannins bind to the proteins of the injured tissues, precipitating them (Fernandez et al., 2002) and creating a protective layer (Neto et al., 1996). This layer isolates the wound site from the environment, reducing the permeability and exudation of the wound (Brown, Dattner, 1998;Bedi, Shenefelt, 2002) and promoting tissue repair. Tannins also exhibit vasoconstrictor and anti-inflammatory properties (Mota et al., 1985;Kapu et al., 2001) and stimulate the growth of epidermis, aiding reepithelialization (Palermo et al., 2002;. Reepithelialization involves the proliferation and migration of cells from the edges of the wound, and is regulated by mechanisms involving genes, growth factors, integrins, extracellular matrices (ECM) and metalloproteinases (MMPs) (Santoro, Gaudino, 2005).Stryphnodendron Martius, Leguminosae, popularly known as "barbatimão", is a Brazilian savannah tree. Extracts of the stem bark from species of Stryphnodendron have several medically useful properties, such as antiinflamma...
Zooplankton produce resting eggs and diapause stages as strategies to promote their survival during periods of adverse environmental conditions, thereby ensuring the community diversity. The goal of this study is to investigate the contribution of these eggs, which were present in the sediment of an isolated lagoon in the Upper Paraná River floodplain, to cladoceran diversity. The species hatching from the resting eggs in the sediment do not occur in the plankton. Sediment samples were collected at six sampling sites in the Osmar Zooplankton were sampled in the pelagic region, using a motorized pump (1000 L) and plankton net (68 μm). The pH, water temperature (°C), electrical conductivity (μS cm -1 ) and dissolved oxygen concentration (mg L -1 ) also were measured. The resting eggs were counted in the laboratory, being maintained under constant temperature and photoperiod until their analyses. The resting eggs were examined daily until hatching. A higher abundance of these eggs was observed in July, during a period of lower temperature and electrical conductivity, and higher pH and dissolved oxygen concentrations. ANOVA results indicated significant differences in resting egg abundance among the sampling months. Ceriodaphnia reticulata, Macrothrix spinosa, Ilyocryptus spinifer, Ephemeroporus tridentatus and Diaphanosoma sp. hatched from the resting eggs, although they were not observed in the plankton samples. C. reticulata was observed for the first time in this floodplain, with these study results corroborating the hypothesis that resting cladoceran eggs do contribute to zooplankton diversity in the lagoon.
ABSTRACT. Processes related to biological invasion of inland waters have become a major issue due to the increasing number of cases associated with the potential effects of invasions. Kellicottia bostoniensis and K. longispina are rotifer species originating from North America and have become invasive in several continents. In this sense, this study carried out a scientometric analysis to analyze the geographical distribution and identify patterns of occurrence as well as to fill gaps on the knowledge of these species. The survey was based on articles indexed in databases from 1896 to 2014. There is a greater scientific knowledge of these species in the temperate region, and these are present in many different environments. In Brazil, there is a very small number of studies, and no record of K. longispina. Therefore, it is noteworthy the importance of studies on the occurrence and abundance of these species in poorly studied areas, such as subtropical and tropical regions, for a better understanding of their invasive potential, given the potential effects on different communities, which can affect the structure and dynamics of environments. Keywords: Rotifera, zooplankton, dispersal potential, time trend.
In floodplains, rotifers are among the most abundant zooplankton organisms and play an important role in ecosystem functioning. Here, we evaluated the distribution of six feeding guilds of rotifers including filter C1 (body size: <200 µm), filter C2 (body size: >200 to <600 µm), filter C3 (body size: >600 to <1000 µm), filter C4 (body size: >1000 µm), suctor, and predator for 11 years. We also analyzed the relationship between guild distribution and environmental parameters (i.e., chlorophyll‐a, phosphate, nitrate, ammonia, and inorganic suspended matter). Finally, we investigated the relationship between feeding guilds heterogeneity (abundance inconsistency) and environmental heterogeneity. Sampling occurred every 3 months from 2000 to 2010 in six shallow lakes of the Upper Paraná River floodplains. Filters C1, Filter C2, and suctors were the dominant feeding guilds. Nitrate and chlorophyll‐a shaped the temporal distribution of the guilds. An intermediate value of environmental heterogeneity was correlated with greater feeding guilds heterogeneity, potentially indicating that intermediate disturbance in the environmental variables may allow for greater differences in abundance distribution between rotifer guilds in shallow floodplain lakes. Our study elucidated the role of rotifers in food resource consumption, energy transfer, and competitive relationships in response to temporal environmental heterogeneity in subtropical floodplains.
ABSTRACT. Zooplankton is able to respond promptly to environmental changes, producing resting forms in order to maintain populations when the conditions become unfavorable. The hatchling of the resting eggs was assessed in environments from the upper Paraná river floodplain, during the limnophase of 2008. We predicted that a higher production of these eggs and individuals' hatchling are observed at isolated lakes, during dried period. Sediment samples were obtained with a corer sampler. The resting eggs were sorted and kept in filtered water from the same environment, in the laboratory. We recorded the occurrence of 378 resting eggs, of which 122 individuals hatched (70 cladocerans and 52 rotifers). The highest number of hatchlings was verified for the isolated lakes (84 individuals), as well the shorter time for hatchling (2 days). The hatchlings occurred mainly in September, when we registered the lowest hydrologic level of Paraná river (2.40 m). Grimaldina brazzai presented the longest time for hatchling, 44 days; and Brachionus dolabratus and B. falcatus, the shortest time, 2 days. This result suggests that the longer residence time of the water, which did not allow a renewal of food resources and limnological conditions of the environment, caused a higher stress in the zooplankton.
