The simultaneous, real time observation of oxygen evolution in the gas phase and in solution enables advanced mechanistic studies which are critical for technologies including water electrolysis, fuel cells, oxidation catalysis and metal–air batteries.
IMPORTANCE There are no established measures to prevent nocturnal breathing disturbances and other altitude-related adverse health effects (ARAHEs) among lowlanders with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) traveling to high altitude. OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether nocturnal oxygen therapy (NOT) prevents nocturnal hypoxemia and breathing disturbances during the first night of a stay at 2048 m and reduces the incidence of ARAHEs. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial was performed from January to October 2014 with 32 patients with COPD living below 800 m with forced expiratory volume in the first second of expiration (FEV 1) between 30% and 80% predicted, pulse oximetry of at least 92%, not requiring oxygen therapy, and without history of sleep apnea. Evaluations were performed at the University Hospital Zurich (490 m, baseline) and during 2 stays of 2 days and nights each in a Swiss Alpine hotel at 2048 m while NOT or placebo treatment was administered in a randomized order. Between altitude sojourns, patients spent at least 2 weeks
Thin films of Sr2FeMoO6 (SFMO) are grown epitaxially on (001) SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The in-plane and out-of-plane SFMO lattice parameters are determined for different thicknesses, from 13 to 600 nm. Samples below a critical thickness of around 34 nm are fully strained, samples between 34 and 80 nm are relaxing, and samples between 80 and 600 nm are fully relaxed. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that the relaxation is done by stacking the faults perpendicular to the substrate. Ab initio calculations show first that the variation of SFMO lattice parameters due to strain has a limited impact on the magnetization, which is also observed experimentally. Second, ab initio calculations indicate that SFMO is half metallic only for thicknesses above 44 nm.
Background:Treatment planning of localised prostate cancer remains challenging. Besides conventional parameters, a wealth of prognostic biomarkers has been proposed so far. None of which, however, have successfully been implemented in a routine setting so far. The aim of our study was to systematically verify a set of published prognostic markers for prostate cancer. Methods:Following an in-depth PubMed search, 28 markers were selected that have been proposed as multivariate prognostic markers for primary prostate cancer. Their prognostic validity was examined in a radical prostatectomy cohort of 238 patients with a median follow-up of 60 months and biochemical progression as endpoint of the analysis. Immunohistochemical evaluation was performed using previously published cut-off values, but allowing for optimisation if necessary. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression were used to determine the prognostic value of biomarkers included in this study. Results:Despite the application of various cut-offs in the analysis, only four (14%) markers were verified as independently prognostic (AKT1, stromal AR, EZH2, and PSMA) for PSA relapse following radical prostatectomy. Conclusions:Apparently, many immunohistochemistry-based studies on prognostic markers seem to be over-optimistic. Codes of best practice, such as the REMARK guidelines, may facilitate the performance of conclusive and transparent future studies.
Si nanocrystals were formed in synthetic opals by Si-ion implantation and their optical properties studied using microphotoluminescence and reflection techniques. The properties of areas with high crystalline quality are compared with those of disordered regions of samples. The photoluminescence spectrum from Si nanocrystals embedded in silica spheres is narrowed by the inhibition of emission at wavelengths corresponding to the opal photonic pseudoband gap (∼690 nm). Measurements of photoluminescence spectra from individual implanted silica spheres is also demonstrated and the number of emitting Si nanocrystals in single brightly emitting spheres is estimated to be of the order of one thousand.
Safety of live vaccines given to immunosuppressed patients cannot be concluded. However, it is re-assuring that in the examined patient groups no serious side effects or infections by the attenuated vaccine strain occurred.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
