Nous soumettons le résultat de douze ans de recherches etde méditations aujugement du public, qui, à nos yeux, est le seul juge compétent en toutes choses. Le Nouveau système de physiologie végétale a marché de pair avec le Nouveau système de chimie organique ,s>uy les méthodes duquel il est fondé. Immédiatement après la publication de ce dernier, nous avons commencé à mettre en ordre les matériaux qui devaient entrer dans la composition de celui-ci: toute la belle saison de 1834 a été consacrée à la confection des dessins de nos planches; l'année 1835 et une grande partie de l'année 1836, à la gravure de l'atlas. L'impression de l'ouvrage a commencé en janvier 1836. En tête de ses Familles des plantes^Adanson crut devoir avertir le lecteur que l'impression en avait duré l'espace de trois années. Nous avons adopté, dans la rédaction du présent ouvrage, une forme nouvelle; mais c'est la seule qui nous ait paru propre à atteindre notre but. Nous avons voulu composer un traité approfondi et en même temps écrire un livre élémentaire : nous avons voulu parler à la fois à ceux qui savent et à ceux qui apprennent. Dans cette intention, nous avons pris une marche progressive; des cinq parties qui divisent ces deux volumes, la première prépare la seconde, la seconde la troisième, et ainsi de suite, mais de manière que chacune d'elles forme un tout indépendant. L'élève qui VI introduction: n'apprendrait que la première partie intitulée Nomenclature, saurait autant de botanique, qu'on en apprend dans les ouvrages scolastiques; seulement il la classerait mieux dans son esprit.
