The ITER magnet procurement is now well underway. The magnet systems consist of 4 superconducting coil sets (toroidal field (TF), poloidal field (PF), central solenoid (CS) and correction coils (CC)) which use both NbTi and -based conductors. The magnets sit at the core of the ITER machine and are tightly integrated with each other and the main vacuum vessel. The total weight of the system is about 10000 t, of which about 500 t are strands and 250 t, NbTi. The reaction of the magnetic forces is a delicate balance that requires tight control of tolerances and the use of high-strength, fatigue-resistance steel forgings. Integration and support of the coils and their supplies, while maintaining the necessary tolerances and clearance gaps, have been completed in steps, the last being the inclusion of the feeder systems. Twenty-one procurement agreements have now been signed with 6 of the ITER Domestic Agencies for all of the magnets together with the supporting feeder subsystems. All of them except one (for the CS coils) are so-called Build to Print agreements where the IO provides the detailed design including full three-dimensional CAD models. The production of the first components is underway (about 175 t of strand was finished by July 2011) and manufacturing prototypes of TF coil components are being completed. The paper will present a design overview and the manufacturing status.

In the framework of the Future Circular Collider design study for a 100 TeV circular collider, 16 T superconducting bending magnets based on Nb 3 Sn technology are being developed. A prestress on the conductor during magnet assembly at room temperature (RT) is needed to counteract the Lorentz forces during operation. The superconducting properties of the brittle Nb 3 Sn superconductor are strain sensitive and excessive pre-stress leads to an irreversible degradation of the superconductor. In order to determine the level of acceptable pre-stress during the magnet assembly process, reacted and impregnated Nb 3 Sn cables were exposed to increasing transverse compressive stress up to a maximum stress level of 200 MPa at RT. After each stress cycle, the critical current of the cable specimens were characterized at 4.3 K in the FRESCA cable test station. No significant critical current degradation was observed up to 150 MPa, followed by degradation less than 4% after a nominal stress of 175 MPa. A dramatic permanent critical current degradation occurred after applying a nominal stress of 200 MPa. A comprehensive post analysis consisting of non-destructive micro-tomography followed by microscopic characterization of metallographic cable cross sections was carried out after the critical current test to reveal cracks in the Nb 3 Sn sub-elements of the loaded specimen.

International audienceA next step of energy increase of hadron colliders beyond the LHC requires high-field superconducting magnets capable of providing a dipolar field in the range of 16 T in a 50-mm aperture with accelerator quality. These characteristics could meet the requirements for an upgrade of the LHC to twice the present beam energy or for a 100-TeV center of mass energy future circular collider. This paper summarizes the activities and plans for the development of these magnets, in particular within the 16 T Magnet Technology Program, the WP5 of the EuroCirCol, and the U.S. Magnet Development Program
