A determinação da zona ripária, área de influência direta dos rios que define a área de preservação permanente, é até hoje subjetiva. Neste contexto, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a fenologia de quatro espécies nativas e abundantes neste sistema, a fim de relacionar a variação fenológica dos indivíduos com a distância do curso d'água. As parcelas foram estabelecidas à margem esquerda do Rio Gualaxo do Norte, no município de Mariana, MG, área que hoje é afetada pela mineração. As espécies escolhidas foram aquelas que apresentaram maior freqüência, estando presentes em todas faixas: Cupania vernalis, Hyeronima alchorneoides, Inga sessilis e Croton floribundus. Concluiu-se que a distância do rio influenciou a queda de folhas das espécies C. vernalis., H. alchorneoides. e I. sessilis. A queda de folhas da espécie C. floribundus aparentemente não sofreu influência da distância do rio. Indivíduos da espécie Inga sessilis apresentaram floração, que também se relacionou com a distância do curso d'água.
