Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) landrace of Zaer had been on-farm conserved thanks to ingenious farmers' practices. Farmers had selected, produced and maintained their landrace to satisfy their food security, ecological and economical needs. However, the increase of drought incidence had encouraged farmers to gradual abandonment of their landrace for L 56 improved variety to increase productivity and incomes. The landrace is therefore threatened for genetic drift by climatic change, varieties innovation and economic development. The main objective of this study is to strengthen the on farm conservation of lentil landrace of Zaer through its promotion under a distinctive sign of origin and quality in accordance with national agricultural policy. Thus, the investigation is focused on analyzing (i) farmers' knowledge through field survey of 41 farmers randomly chosen across Zaer region, (ii) genetic structure of landrace as meta-population and by four geographical locations using biochemical markers (SDS-PAGE), and (iii) genetic relationship between the landrace and L 56 improved variety cultivated in Zaer. Data analysis had provide us with valuable information's on seed management according to climate and farmers' category, genetic structure of landrace as meta-population which was shaped by both natural pressures and human practices, and on seeds flow between landrace and L 56 variety that might be linked to seed acquisition, spatial organization of production field or to post-harvest seed management.
Aphid control in Moroccan citrus orchards is based mainly on carbamate and neonicotinoid sprays, especially methomyl and imidacloprid. The extensive use of these insecticides may have side effects on natural enemies and environment quality and raises human health concerns. This research aimed to assess the control of aphids with insecticidal soap, kaolin and augmentative biological control using the indigenous predator Adalia decempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). The insecticides were applied and the predators were released in April 2009 and 2010. Under field experimentation, the methomyl and imidacloprid foliar pulverization were very effective against aphids. In contrast, the insecticidal soap and kaolin application were less efficient while A. decempunctata adults were effective only in the first week after release. The side effects on beneficial insects were also assessed and discussed. The possibility of employing A. decempunctata in an integrated pest management package in citrus groves is discussed in relation to effectiveness and side effects on beneficial arthropods.
This is the first report of genotype-phenotype correlation in a large cohort of Moroccan PCG. Our results revealed that the worst phenotype and prognosis were observed in the double null CYP1B1 allele carriers followed by the nondouble null but other CYP1B1 mutations. This will contribute to the prediction of the prognosis of the disease.
Plants are exposed to various stress factors including biotic and abiotic stresses. Drought is a limiting factor that minimizes the development and growth of several plants in arid and semi-arid regions. Stress response is usually occur at different levels, Morphological, physiological and biochemical while at the molecular level a large number of genes are involved. This study aims at developing a new SSR primer for aquaporin related to drought stress in plants. A total of 177 complete coding sequences (CDS) available in the NCBI database are downloaded. After analyzing with BLAST, 163 sequences are selected. 1294 SSR derived from these sequences are characterized with MISA and indicating that all sequences contained SSRs. The most abundant SSR has been tetra-nucleotide repeat motif (36%) and among all the tetra-nucleotide repeats, the motif AAAG/CTTT was the most common type, whereas in tri-nucleotide, the motif CCG/CGG has been the predominate type. By using Primer3, 1120 primer pairs are generated and after analyzing, only 735 non redundant primer pairs that present the good characteristics are selected. Among them, some of the pairs of primers are randomly selected and validated on DNA of various species using PCR and agarose gel. ARTICLE HISTORY
Flour quality is influenced by the nature of the gluten and its various components. Gluten free flour made of pulses is known to enhance the nutritional quality of wheat flour. However, its addition can compromise the rheological and sensorial attributes of the bread. We used mixture design to optimize nutritional and technological qualities of a wheat–chickpea flour blend by adding milk powder as a natural organoleptic improver. A total of thirteen flour blends were prepared by incorporating 10 to 30% chickpea flour and 10 to 20% milk powder to wheat flour. Our results showed that the optimal flour blend consisted of 60% wheat, 24% chickpea, and 16% milk powder. Farinographic parameters of the optimal dough blend remained on par with those of the control dough (100% wheat flour), thereby preserving its bread-making quality. Sensory analysis of breads made from the optimal flour blend revealed no significant difference (p ≤ 0.05) from wheat flour for crumb and chewiness. Appreciation was brought to the appearance, crust, aroma, and taste in the optimized bread. This study suggests that chickpea flour can be suitably incorporated into bread wheat flour up to a percentage of 24% with 16% milk powder to produce bread with optimal nutritional quality while improving its sensory attributes and consumer acceptability.
