In ihrer bisherigen Anwendung dient die Pollenanalyse bekanntlich in erster Linie zur Feststellung der Zusammensetzung der W~lder eines Gebietes zu bestimmter Zeit. Wenn sie aueh nur relative Mengenanteile zu erschlieBen erlaubt und die gefundenen Werte auch noch von versehiedenen Fehlerquellen betroffen werden, besonders dem Ausfall einiger Arten mit unkenntlichem oder nicht erhaltungsf~higem Pollen und der verschiedenen Pollenproduktion der einzelnen Arten, so ersteht vor uns doch seit fiber 10 Jahren ein Bild yon der nacheiszeitlichen Waldgeschichte Europas, das in seiner Zuverl~ssigkeit und Vollstandigkeit frfil/er als unerreichbares Ziel h~tte gelten mfissen. Je eingehender wir aber die nacheiszeitliche Waldentwicklung kennen lernen, und je dringender wir hierbei nach ihren Ursachen fragen, um so mehr wendet sich das Interesse jenen frfihen, hoch-und sp~tglazialen Zeitabschnitten zu, in denen der ~Wald in Mitteleuropa o~fenbar noeh eine sehr untergeordnete Rolle spielte. ~ber diese Zeiten aber wissen wir noch sehr wenig. Lage und Zusammensetzung der glazialen Waldgrenzen, Ausma{3 und Dauer der Waldlosigkeit in verschiedenen Gebieten sind uns fast unbekannt, und fiber die glaziale und sp~tglaziale Vegetation mii~sen wir uns fast ausschlieBlieh mit den Feststellungen begnfigen, die die makroskopischen Reste der in den meisten Landschaften allzusp~rlichen, wenn nicht fehlenden, ,,Glazialfloren" erm6glichen. Aber aueh sp~terhin, bei der Besch~ftigung mit den nacheiszeitlichen Waldperioden, sto{3en wir immer wieder auf Fragen, die der Vegetation waldarmer oder waldloser Gebiete und der Walddichte gelten: etwa nach dem Bestande natfirliehen Graslandes und natiirlicher Heide oder naeh der Lage der Waldgrenzen im Gebirge und an der Kfiste.Die Anwendung der Pollenanalyse nun auch auf die Kl~rung solcher Fragen auszudehnen, ist bisher noch recht wenig versucht worden. Zwar muB man von vornherein annehmen, dab 1. der Niedersehlag an Waldbaumpollen in waldlosen Gebieten absolut gering und seine Zusammensetzung Ausdruek des weiten Flugweges sein wird, etwa insofern, als eine Auslese der flugfghigeren Typen erfolgen mag;
