Selection index for choosing segregating populations in common beanAbstract -The objectives of this work were to determine the viability of using a selection index based on the sum of standardized variables in common bean breeding programs, and to identify the most promising segregating populations for grain productivity, plant growth habit and resistance to lodging simultaneously. Segregant populations obtained by crosses in partial diallel scheme (6x6) were evaluated. Parental genotypes were divided in two groups. Group I comprised parents of the carioca grain type, with semierect to prostate growth habit. Group II comprised parental lines with erect architecture, but with grains not classifi ed as the standard carioca type. The F2 and F3 generations of the obtained hybrid combinations were evaluated in randomized block design, with three replicates and sowing in November 2007 and February 2008, respectively. Data of grain yield, score for plant growth habit and score for lodging were standardized per plot (Z ij ). The selection index for the three characters together was obtained from the Z ij sum. This selection index makes it possible to choose superior segregating populations considering grain yield, scores for plant growth habit, and for lodging simultaneously. Segregating populations CV III 8511 x BRS 7762 Supremo, CV III 8511 x RP 166 and CV III 8511 x RP 26 are identifi ed as promising...
Phosphorus (P) deficiency is a major limiting factor for crop production in several countries. A better understanding of the genetic components of P use efficiency (PUE) is required to improve crop performance in low‐P soils. To date, no QTLs (quantitative trait loci) were mapped for PUE using grain yield and other late phenotypic data in tropical conditions. Thus, we evaluated the genetic architecture of PUE in tropical maize (Zea mays L.) using multiple interval mapping for design III in a population of 140 RILs (recombinant inbred lines) backcrossed with both parental lines. The parental lines contrasted for yield and for PUE, a phenotypic index that was further decomposed into P acquisition efficiency (PAE) and P utilization efficiency. Our results showed that dominance effects were more important than additive effects for explaining the variations in PUE and its components. Approximately 80% of the QTLs mapped for PAE co‐localized with those for PUE, indicating that the efficiency in acquiring P is the main determinant of PUE in tropical maize. Also, QTLs for PUE and PAE were located near to candidate genes previously associated with root development. Thus, we present important information to guide breeding strategies for the development of maize cultivars more adapted to P deficiency.
Chemical and structural aspects of the physiological quality of soybean seedsAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the additive and non-additive genetic effects for thickness of the seed coat layers and of the lignin present in them, and to verify if the characters used to evaluate the physiological quality of the seeds is correlated with the lignin content. Three cultivars (M-Soy 8400, CD 201, CD 206) with high and three (CD 215, CD 202, Savana) with low physiological quality were used to obtain F 1 and F 2 hybrid seeds, including the reciprocals, using partial diallel crosses and the parental lines. First germination count, fi nal germination count and germination rate, used to evaluate the physiological quality, can be correlated with lignin content. Positive correlations were observed between lignin content and the percentage of normal seedlings in the aging test at the 5 th and 11 th days after sowing, with the highest correlation values at the 5 th day. The correlation between germination rate and lignin content was negative. The diallel analysis showed reciprocal effect, showing that the thickness of the seed coat layers and of the lignin contained in these layers can be explained by maternal effect.Index terms: Glycine max, diallel cross, lignin, seed coat.

Diallel analysis of maize lines as to their phosphorus responsiveness and use efficiencyAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate additive and nonadditive genetic effects on P use efficiency and responsiveness to the nutrient in maize lines. Nine contrasting inbred lines -efficient or not regarding P use efficiency -were evaluated in diallel crosses, in a randomized complete block design, for two years, under two availability levels of the nutrient in an Oxisol. The L3 and L228-3 lines showed the highest average effects for general combining ability (GCA, ĝ i ), indicating use efficiency in the absence of P, and responsiveness, in the presence. The L51502020 x L22 and L36 x L56.800.84 crosses had the highest average effects for specific combining ability (SCA, ŝ ij ) in the presence and in the absence of P, respectively. The quadratic components for GCA were higher than those for SCA, in the absence of P, and lower in the presence, showing that the additive effects predominated in P use efficiency, and the nonadditive ones predominated in the plant responsiveness to the nutrient. The genotype combining ability interacted with the environments; therefore, the selection of the best parent and of the best hybrid combination should be done in specific environments. The inbred lines show genic complementary action regarding P use efficiency.Index terms: Zea mays, specific combining ability, general combining ability, genic complementary action, nutritional efficiency. Nine-hole system efficiency in selection of carioca-type common bean progenies for erect architectureAbstract -The objective of this work was to verify the nine-hole system efficiency in the evaluation of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) carioca-type progenies for plant architecture. Ninety-seven progenies were evaluated in the F 2:3 and F 2:4 generations in an randomized block design, with 20 replicates, and nine plants per plot, in which the central plant was evaluated, and the eight neighbor ones were considered together as the control. The evaluated traits were: grain yield per plant, architecture and lodging. The joint selection index (Z ij ) for the three characters was obtained through the sum of the standardized values per plot. Data were submitted to the analysis of variance, and from the mean square expected values, the components of variance were estimated. It is possible to identify more upright plants using the nine-hole system, in segregating common bean populations. This system allows for high estimates of experimental accuracy and heritability.Index terms: Phaseolus vulgaris, lodging, heritability, selection index, experimental precision. ...
The development of aluminum (Al)-tolerant cultivars is a complementary strategy to overcome the constraints caused by Al toxicity on acid soils and can contribute positively to the food supply for the growing global population. A major Al tolerance quantitative trait locus in maize is controlled by a citrate transporter encoded by ZmMATE1. Our goal was to evaluate the impact of the superior allele of ZmMATE1 on the yield performance of maize lines and hybrids cultivated on acid soils. Near-isogenic lines carrying the superior allele of ZmMATE1, and the recurrent Al-sensitive parent were crossed with elite lines, generating near-isogenic hybrids contrasting for these alleles. All maize genotypes carrying this superior allele were more Al tolerant in nutrient solution than their isogenic counterparts having the ZmMATE1 allele derived from the Al-sensitive parent. These genotypes were cultivated in control and Al stress soils for 2 yr. Aluminum toxicity caused a significant yield reduction of 18.7% for lines and 14.7% for hybrids over the 2 yr. The yield performance of maize genotypes declined in the second year compared with the first year, probably due to water deficiency after the grain-filling stage. The superior allele of ZmMATE1 in maize hybrids conferred yield gains from 21 to 48% compared with the hybrids harboring the alternative allele in the Al stress soil in the first and second years, respectively. As this superior allele is rare in maize and is likely absent in several elite germplasms, molecular breeding based on ZmMATE1 can improve maize yield stability on acid soils.
