A highly portable Fortran precompiler which allows simphfied computation with nonstandard arithmetics is described The philosophy and design goals are bnefly presented, the major capabilities of the precompfler are described, and some apphcatmns are brmfly discussed. A summary is made of the experience with the precompiler. The precompfler is intended to furnish workmg programmers with a ready means of using nonstandard anthmetms

ABSTRA CTWe discuss the use of a FORTRAN preoospiler in the development of packages for non standard arithmetics. In particular , the use of the FORTRAN preco.-piler , AUGMENT , renders the source code more lucid , red uces the rnaber of lines of code in a nonstandard arithmetic package , facilitates modification , and amel iorates the problems of transp orting such a package to another host system.
