Abstract. We describe the continuous and discrete mathematical models for Emission Computed Tomography (ECT) and the need for attenuation correction. Then we analyse the problem of retrieving the attenuation directly from the emission data, nonuniqueness and its consequences. We present the existing and new approaches for solving the problem. Methods are compared and illustrated by numerical simulations. The presentation focuses on Positron Emission Tomography, but we also discuss the extensions to Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography.Mathematical subject classification: 44A12, 65R30, 65R32.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
