Summary Fifty‐six Awassi ewes and twenty‐seven native goats were used to test the accuracy of the ultra‐sonic Doppler fetometer device (USDF) in pregnancy diagnosis as compared with the clinical abdominal palpation technique. The results showed that the instrument could efficiently diagnose pregnancy in both species, while the abdominal technique was less reliable. The ultra‐sonic technique served as a good indicator for diagnosing the well‐being of the fetus only when it is living. In cases of intrauterine fetal death the instrument alone failed either to diagnose pregnancy or the viability of the fetus. Combining abdominal palpation with sonic findings may be more helpful. The study showed also that the ultra‐sonic technique was more successful than abdominal palpation in the detection of fetal numbers. In ewes the highly significant negative correlation between heart rate and fetal age seemed to fit a curvilinear pattern and allowed an approximate estimate of the likely date of birth to be made. The merits and demerits of the USDF are discussed.
