A morte súbita é um evento inesperado, em que a evolução rápida dos sintomas em paciente previamente hígido leva à morte do infante em um tempo estimado de uma hora. Na infância, é uma entidade rara e geralmente de causa desconhecida (WILLINGER, 1991). Na morte súbita de causa inexplicável, o médico legista não consegue estabelecer uma causa ou existem poucas evidências que corroborem com causas aventadas. Na explicável, após o exame médico legal, é estabelecida uma etiologia bem definida e robusta da causa, incluindo abuso infantil e asfixia por fatores ambientais (SHAPIRO-MENDOZA, 2021). Esse capítulo tem o objetivo de mostrar as principais causas de morte súbita na infância e apontar estratégias na sua prevenção.
