The research on nonclinical samples reports the effect of a weak sense of identity on the use of psychoactive substances, but there has been no research to date on sense of identity in individuals with substance use disorder. The aim of the study was to test differences in sense of identity (SoI) in male patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD; n = 95) and drug use disorder (DUD; n = 95), and men without substance use disorder (SUD; n = 87). Participants (N = 277) completed the Multidimensional Identity Questionnaire. The AUD and DUD respondents had a significantly weaker SoI than the control group, and the duration of SUD was not a significant predictor of any of the dimensions of identity in both clinical groups. SUD can be to some extent an attempt at self-medication and compensating for identity disturbances. The study confirms the occurrence of identity disruptions in patients with SUD, which have been described by clinicians.
Insecure attachment style and borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms are related to the severity of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and can also complicate its course and treatment. We propose a theoretical model of relationships between adult attachment style and BPD and AUD symptom severity in which the sense of identity is a mediator. The aim of our study was to test this model in a sample of male inpatients with AUD. Male inpatients with AUD (N = 114) aged 22–72 years (M = 43.05; SD = 9.84) completed the Experiences in Close Relationships‐Revised, the Multidimensional Identity Questionnaire, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test and the Borderline Symptom List 23. Results showed that the sense of identity fully mediated the positive relationship between attachment anxiety and BPD symptom severity. There was also a positive indirect effect of attachment avoidance on BPD symptoms via weaker sense of identity. Contrary to hypothesis, AUD symptom severity was not related to attachment, identity or BPD symptoms in our sample. Sense of identity could be a possible target for interventions for insecurely attached men with AUD to reduce BPD symptoms.
Introduction: Identity is seen as the basis for human mental and psychosocial functioning. The formation of a coherent and stable identity is treated as crucial for a person's healthy development whereas difficulties in terms of its formation can lead to various forms of disorder. The aim of the research was to verify if alcohol dependent people differ from the nondependent in terms of identity coherence, stability, accessibility, specificity, separateness and valuation, also taking gender into account. And whether identity in the group of alcohol dependent persons relates to the length of dependence, length of abstinence, number of undertaken therapies, level of alcohol use, gender and age. Material and methods: The sample consisted of 221 alcohol dependent (including 166 men) and 121 non-dependent persons (including 84 men). In order to examine the features of the identity dimension structure, Pilarska's Multidimensional Questionnaire of Identity was used. Test AUDIT was used to estimate the level of alcohol use. Results: The variance analysis proved that the alcohol dependent persons obtain lower Streszczenie Wprowadzenie: Tożsamość uznawana jest za podstawę psychicznego i psychospołecznego funkcjonowania człowieka.
The adolescence period is a time in which appear some significant adjustments concerning one’s identity. Adolescents, both males and females, have to undertake new forms of behaviour and experiment in order to determine their own place in the society and to find the answer to the question ‘who am I?’. Risk behaviours, including using alcohol by young people during adolescence, are supposed to meet the developmental challenges, bearing in mind personal resources and limitations occurring in the context of the development of an adolescent. The article presents a discussion concerning the meaning of a developing identity in using alcohol by adolescents as well as the proper understanding of teenagers’ identity dilemmas when relevant psychological and pedagogical interventions are chosen.
