Celem artykułu jest ukazanie, jaki wpływ na polską gospodarkę miała pandemia COVID-19 w porównaniu do sytuacji w krajach członkowskich Unii Europejskiej. Chodzi o najważniejsze skutki gospodarcze, które wystąpiły w warunkach aktywnego wspierania gospodarki przez rządowy program antykryzysowy łagodzący negatywne skutki wywołane pandemią w latach 2020–21 (tarcza antykryzysowa). Analizie poddano program rządowy oraz wskaźniki rynku pracy — stopę bezrobocia i zmiany liczby pracujących w ujęciu branżowym. Sytuacja w Unii Europejskiej została omówiona z wykorzystaniem podstawowych wskaźników makroekonomicznych, jak dynamika wzrostu PKB oraz dług i wynik sektora finansów publicznych — każdy z tych wskaźników odnotował efekty zamknięcia gospodarki. Sekcje PKD „Zakwaterowanie i gastronomia” oraz „Handel; naprawy pojazdów samochodowych” najbardziej odczuły skutki kryzysu. Są też branże, które odnotowały pozytywne efekty działalności mimo lockdownu, na przykład „Informacja i komunikacja”. Wskaźniki sytuacji w Polsce w ujęciu makroekonomicznym sytuują ją w grupie krajów, które skutecznie przeciwdziałają skutkom pandemii, co dobrze wróży na okres odbudowy gospodarki po pandemii.
Terminy „praca na własny rachunek” i „samozatrudnienie” są często stosowane jako synonimy. Artykuł wskazuje na różnice znaczeniowe tych pojęć, a także na rozmaite sposoby ich definiowania. Autorka przywołuje liczne definicje proponowane przez naukę, polską i zagraniczną literaturę przedmiotu oraz podawane w aktach prawa krajowego i międzynarodowego. Z uwagi na ewolucję współczesnych form pracy opisane zostały też zjawiska networkingu, zatrudnienia hybrydowego i inne formy samozatrudnienia zyskujące popularność w ostatnich latach, zwłaszcza w sektorze gospodarki cyfrowej. Opracowanie prezentuje obfitość źródeł i poglądów badaczy, analizujących pracę na własny rachunek jako ważny element współczesnej gospodarki.
