Knowledge of the structure-property-function relationship of humic substances (HSs) is key for understanding their role in soil. Despite progress, studies on this topic are still under discussion. We analyzed 37 humic fractions with respect to their isotopic composition, structural characteristics, and properties responsible for stimulating plant root parameters. We showed that regardless of the source of origin of the carbon (C3 or C4), soil-extracted HSs and humic acids (HAs) are structurally similar to each other. The more labile and functionalized HS fraction is responsible for root emission, whereas the more recalcitrant and less functionalized HA fraction is related to root growth. Labile structures promote root stimulation at lower concentrations, while recalcitrant structures require higher concentrations to promote a similar stimulus. These findings show that lability and recalcitrance, which are derived properties of humic fractions, are related to the type and intensity of their bioactivity. In summary, the comparison of humic fractions allowed a better understanding of the relationship between the source of origin of plant carbon and the structure, properties, and type and intensity of the bioactivity of HSs in plants. In this study, scientific concepts are unified and the basis for the agronomic use of HSs is established.
Composting and vermicomposting of home residues with bovine manure for organic amendment productionAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the production of organic amendment from home residues by integration of composting and vermicomposting processes with and without bovine manure. Two experimental steps were adopted: in the first one, thermal stabilization of the residues and adequate conditions were set up for earthworm introduction; in the second step, at 27 days of thermal stabilization, residues remained from the first step were placed in a 9-dm 3 container, with and without earthworms, in a completed randomized experimental design of four replicates. Evaluations were made at 19, 55, 69-day period for reproduction and survival rate of adult worms, and chemical attributes of the compost with and without earthworms. Earthworms survived and reproduced in the substrates, and manure gave the highest reproduction rate. The utilization of organic home residues for production of amendment is technically viable by means of composting or vermicomposting. Addition of doses of manure did not decreased the time for compost maturation. Except for the alteration in the levels of K and Mg, the integration of composting and vermicomposting processes yielded products with similar chemical composition.Index terms: earthworm, organic composting, reproduction.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the accumulation of fresh weight of hydroponic lettuce in terms of ionic concentrations and flow rates of nutrient solution. This work consisted of three experiments in NFT hydroponic system, conducted between July and September 2006. Lettuce cultivars Lucy Brown, Izabela and Veneza were grown in different ionic concentrations of the 100, 75 and 50% and flow rates of 1.50, 1.00 and 0.75 L min-1. Fresh weight gains were observed for Lucy Brown when grown on 100% of the ion concentration and a flow rate of nutrient solution of 1.0 L min-1. Greater fresh mass was observed for cvs. Izabela and Veneza under the flow rate of 1.5 L min-1. A general analysis of the data allows us to conclude that the application of nutrient solution at a flow rate of 1.5 L min-1, as well as 100% of the ionic concentration is effective to increase the fresh weight of the aerial part of cvs. Lucy Brown, Izabela and Veneza when grown in hydroponics.
Most deforested lands in Brazil are occupied by low-productivity cattle ranching. Brazil is the second biggest meat producer worldwide and is projected to increase its agricultural output more than any other country. Biochar has been shown to improve soil properties and agricultural productivity when added to degraded soils, but these effects are context-dependent. The impact of biochar, fertilizer and inoculant on the productivity of forage grasses in Brazil ( Brachiaria spp. and Panicum spp.) was investigated from environmental and socio-economic perspectives. We showed a 27% average increase in Brachiaria production over two years but no significant effects of amendment on Panicum yield. Biochar addition also increased the contents of macronutrients, soil pH and CEC. Each hectare amended with biochar saved 91 tonnes of CO 2 eq through land sparing effect, 13 tonnes of CO 2 eq sequestered in the soil, equating to U$455 in carbon payments. The costs of biochar production for smallholder farmers, mostly because of labour cost, outweighed the potential benefits of its use. Biochar is 617% more expensive than common fertilizers. Biochar could improve productivity of degraded pasturelands in Brazil if investments in efficient biochar production techniques are used and biochar is subsidized by low emission incentive schemes.
