Résumé L’ ecphrasis des médaillons ornant les coupes de Ménalque (Virgile, B. III, 36-42) s’achève sur une devinette célèbre : Ménalque feint d’ignorer l’identité de l’astronome dont le portrait sert de pendant à celui de Conon. Parmi les sept noms proposés dans les Scholia Veronensia pour résoudre cette énigme, celui d’Aratos mérite une attention particulière. Son œuvre s’accorde en effet avec la description donnée dans les 41 et 42, où Ménalque évoque l’œuvre du mystérieux personnage représenté sur le second médaillon. Le texte même de la devinette fournit des indices permettant de reconnaître Aratos : le terme d’ arator (v. 42) constitue peut-être un discret jeu de mots sur le nom du poète. Qu’Aratos demeure innommé s’explique aisément si l’on songe que l’auteur des Phénomènes avait lui-même disposé l’adjectif « arrêton » à l’initiale du deuxième vers de son poème, en guise de signature. L’interrogation de Ménalque ( quis fuit alter ? ) peut en outre être lue comme une allusion à l’épigramme AP IX, 25 où Léonidas de Tarente célèbre l’œuvre d’Aratos.
