Considerações iniciaisAntonio Gramsci (1891-1937) durante sua trajetória de luta pela transformação social radical, sempre se colocou ao lado dos trabalhadores, entendendoos como a classe revolucionária. O filósofo via nos subalternos potenciais formadores para uma nova concepção de sociabilidade, em que o livre pensamento e a criação independente fossem os organizadores de toda a vida, onde todos pudessem ter as condições materiais de existência para que, nas palavras do próprio autor sardo 17 , fossem "o que quisessem ser". Nem a escola, tampouco as fábricas, ou qualquer outro organismo social poderiam determinar a priori o que os sujeitos deveriam vir a ser. O pensamento de Gramsci amplia as possibilidades para refletirmos sobre um processo emancipatório que vise qualificar a vida, buscando a constituição de uma realidade na qual o ser humano esteja eticamente comprometido para com os outros e o outro, rompendo com a lógica contemporânea que contempla o individualismo, cuja a consequência tende para a destruição do sistema da vida no mundo.Gramsci, que sempre demonstrou preocupação com a educação ofertada para a classe trabalhadora, em seus escritos busca entender como ocorre o processo de formação da classe dirigente e da classe subalterna. Na busca pelo entendimento do movimento histórico, o autor sardo elabora uma discussão teórica que se apresenta como alternativa para pensarmos numa formação que supere as contradições da realidade que vivenciamos diariamente. Mesmo não tendo sido um teórico da educação, Gramsci contribuiu para esse campo de conhecimento.
