Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is still a become public health problem in the world. In 2017, there were 68,407 cases with 493 deaths DHF cases in Indonesia . The incidence rate of DHF in 2017 was 26,10/100,000 population. DHF was caused by dengue virus which was transmitted through the bites of Aedes aegypti. Several types of plants such as stems, leaves, and flowers can be used as natural ingredients for repelling Ae. aegypti, Star anise (Illicium verum) has a chemical compound that can be used as a mosquito repellent. The purpose of this study was to know the potential of star anise essential oil as repellents of Ae. aegypti. This study was an experimental study with post test only with control group design. The experiment to test the repellency of star anise essential oil was carried out using concentrations of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% on 3-5 days old female Ae. aegypti. The result of this study showed that repellency index of star anise essential oil at concentration 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% during 6 hours were 58.1%; 63.51%; 59.95%; 49.45% and 65.32%. Star anise essential oil at concentration 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% can provide protection against the bites of Ae. aegypti for 1 until 2 hours.
Extremophilic fish require genetic characterization to determine the identity of their species, their kinship, and the potential for genetic variation due to extreme environmental adaptation. DNA barcoding using Fish-F2 and Fish-R2 primers at an annealing temperature of 52oC for 15 seconds showed qualitative failure results in most fish species. For this reason, optimizing the annealing temperature in the PCR process is necessary to obtain DNA bands that correlate with successful identification. Fish samples were obtained from Ruai Silip, Bangka Island, Membalong, Belitung Island, and Way Kanan, Lampung, Sumatra Island. The annealing temperature optimization was set at 50, 50.4, 51.1, 52.3, 53.7, 54.8, 55.5, and 56°C. Five species of extremophile fish were tested, namely Brevibora sp, Barbodes binotatus, Rasbora bankanensis, Anabas testudineus, and Aplocheilus panchax. Extremophile fish showed differences in the appearance of DNA bands in PCR with different annealing temperatures. Brevibora sp showed a visualization of DNA bands at 54.8°C, Barbodes binotatus at 53.7, 54.8, 55.5, and 56°C, Anabas testudineus at 50 and 50.4°C, and Aplocheilus panchax produced clearly visible band on annealing temperatures.
Selamat membaca!
Fleas as ectoparasites live on the cat's body surface. Ctenocephalides felis is one of the type fleas that often found in cats. The presence of fleas in cats can be influenced by the way the cat is groomed. Fleas in cats have the potential to transmit the disease to a human. The purpose of this study was to determine fleas infestation in domestic cats and determine factors that affect the presence of fleas in cats. This study was observational analytic with a cross-sectional approach and conducted in Banjarnegara Regency on June-November 2019. Total of 100 domestic cats (Felis catus) were checked for fleas. Interviews were conducted with cat owners to obtain information on how to groom cats. Data were analyzed descriptively and statistically using Mann-Whitney and Chi-Square Test. The results showed a greater percentage of fleas positive in groomed cats (82%) than ungroomed cats (68%). Fleas species found in cats were C. felis (99.8%) and Xenopsylla cheopis (0.2%). Based on statistical analysis there was no difference amount of fleas between groomed cats and ungroomed (p = 0.072). A correlation test showed a relationship between the frequency of cats being bathed with cat-specific shampoo and the presence of fleas in cats (p = 0.001). While the habits of cats caging (p = 0.331), the supply of ectoparasiticides (p = 0.177), and the number of cats kept (p = 0.884) showed no significant relationship with the presence of fleas in cats.
