Resumo Este artigo passa em revista a publicação de obras de Paulo Freire traduzidas na França, bem como a publicação de obras francesas sobre o autor, de modo a colocar em discussão a recepção (ou não recepção) das ideias desse pensador da educação no país europeu. Outra linha investigativa deste artigo é a apresentação de alguns resultados de uma pesquisa realizada com militantes da educação popular na França, também para compreender como a obra e o pensamento de Freire impactam esse campo naquele país. O texto reafirma a ideia corrente de que Paulo Freire é bastante conhecido, mas mostra que é pouco lido naquele país. A recepção de seu pensamento se faz muito mais por meio de comentadores e circulação geral das ideias do que de estudos sistematizados de sua obra. O artigo está dividido em duas partes. A primeira delas tem foco no mundo acadêmico, recenseando as traduções de obras de Freire publicadas na França desde a década de 1960, além de analisar as obras acadêmicas produzidas em torno de seu pensamento. A segunda parte dirige-se ao campo militante da educação popular, que vive um momento de recuperação, inclusive com a publicação, em 2021, de uma nova tradução de Pedagogia do Oprimido.
