El paciente con espina bífida (EB), en especial con mielomeningocele (MMC), que es la forma más común y grave de este defecto del tubo neural, además de tener alteraciones motoras y neurológicas que pudieran dificultar la realización de un procedimiento odontológico tiene mayor riesgo a desarrollar alergia al látex, material que está presente en los consultorios. El propósito de esta revisión sistemática exploratoria de la literatura es que el odontopediatra se familiarice con todas las manifestaciones clínicas, tanto médicas como bucales del niño con espina bífida a fin de proporcionarle el mejor y más seguro tratamiento odontológico. La consulta electrónica se realizó mediante la base de datos PubMed, LILACS, SCIELO y Cochrane Library, utilizando las palabras: “espina bífida, mielomeningocele, niños, alergia al látex y odontopediatra, sin establecer un límite de años. Se concluye que son muy pocos los trabajos llevados a cabo, para conocer cuál es el verdadero estado de la salud bucal de estos pacientes, cuáles son sus limitaciones físicas y psicológicas que pudieran dificultar el procedimiento odontológico, así como la ausencia de un protocolo de atención; por lo que es necesario seguir difundiendo información relacionada sobre el paciente odontopediátrico con espina bífida, el cual siempre debe ser considerado alérgico al látex, a fin de desarrollar mejores estrategias de tratamiento y medidas preventivas para mejorar su salud bucal.
