Las quemaduras son lesiones producidas por diferentes mecanismos de transferencia de energía (frío, calor, radiación, fuentes químicas o eléctricas), localizadas en su mayoría en la piel, pero capaces de inducir una respuesta metabólica e inflamatoria sostenida más grave respecto a cualquier otra forma de trauma o enfermedad crítica. Son una de las principales causas de lesiones accidentales y de mortalidad que afecta a todas las edades. La atención del paciente quemado continúa siendo un reto para el personal de salud, debido a todos los procesos fisiopatológicos que se desarrollan de manera simultánea en un mismo paciente durante las diferentes etapas de la enfermedad. Este trabajo es una revisión de la literatura cuyo objetivo principal es destacar los puntos más importantes en el abordaje correcto de estos pacientes en el servicio de urgencias.
