Crystal engineering--the planning and construction of crystalline supramolecular architectures from modular building blocks--permits the rational design of functional molecular materials that exhibit technologically useful behaviour such as conductivity and superconductivity, ferromagnetism and nonlinear optical properties. Because the presence of two cooperative properties in the same crystal lattice might result in new physical phenomena and novel applications, a particularly attractive goal is the design of molecular materials with two properties that are difficult or impossible to combine in a conventional inorganic solid with a continuous lattice. A promising strategy for creating this type of 'bi-functionality' targets hybrid organic/inorganic crystals comprising two functional sub-lattices exhibiting distinct properties. In this way, the organic pi-electron donor bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF) and its derivatives, which form the basis of most known molecular conductors and superconductors, have been combined with molecular magnetic anions, yielding predominantly materials with conventional semiconducting or conducting properties, but also systems that are both superconducting and paramagnetic. But interesting bulk magnetic properties fail to develop, owing to the discrete nature of the inorganic anions. Another strategy for achieving cooperative magnetism involves insertion of functional bulky cations into a polymeric magnetic anion, such as the bimetallic oxalato complex [MnIICrIII(C2O4)3]-, but only insoluble powders have been obtained in most cases. Here we report the synthesis of single crystals formed by infinite sheets of this magnetic coordination polymer interleaved with layers of conducting BEDT-TTF cations, and show that this molecule-based compound displays ferromagnetism and metallic conductivity.

In the last 25 years molecular magnetism has been a source of new molecules exhibiting pronounced quantum effects in the single-molecule limit and new multifunctional materials mixing magnetism with a second property such as chirality, photomagnetism, molecular switching or (super)conductivity. At present, this field is rapidly evolving towards the use of these chemically-designed magnetic molecules and materials in other emerging fields including molecular spintronics and quantum computing. In these research crossroads a multidisciplinary approach is pursued in which the molecular magnetism community interacts with the communities working in molecular electronics, spintronics and quantum technologies with the common goals of creating a new generation of spintronic devices and spin quantum bits using molecular materials, or in the longer term one or a few molecules in the race toward miniaturization. From a materials perspective, molecular magnetism is also approaching to two other hot topics of research, namely metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and twodimensional (2D) materials for which magnetism has only been investigated very recently. In this review I will show the current relevance and future perspectives of molecular magnetism in these four strategic areas of research.

Spins in solids or in molecules possess discrete energy levels, and the associated quantum states can be tuned and coherently manipulated by means of external electromagnetic fields. Spins therefore provide one of the simplest platforms to encode a quantum bit (qubit), the elementary unit of future quantum computers. Performing any useful computation demands much more than realizing a robust qubit-one also needs a large number of qubits and a reliable manner with which to integrate them into a complex circuitry that can store and process information and implement quantum algorithms. This 'scalability' is arguably one of the challenges for which a chemistry-based bottom-up approach is best-suited. Molecules, being much more versatile than atoms and yet microscopic, are the quantum objects with the highest capacity to form non-trivial ordered states at the nanoscale and to be replicated in large numbers using chemical tools. This Perspective discusses how chemistry can contribute to the design of robust spin systems based on mononuclear rare-earth complexes. Using these molecular nanomagnets as key examples, we illustrate the variety of paths that chemistry has recently opened for quantum technologies: from the design of molecular spin qubits with enhanced quantum coherence to the coupling of these for implementing quantum logic gates and, finally, to the integration of such molecular quantum units into devices.

Quantum computing is an emerging area within the information sciences revolving around the concept of quantum bits (qubits). A major obstacle is the extreme fragility of these qubits due to interactions with their environment that destroy their quantumness. This phenomenon, known as decoherence, is of fundamental interest. There are many competing candidates for qubits, including superconducting circuits, quantum optical cavities, ultracold atoms and spin qubits, and each has its strengths and weaknesses. When dealing with spin qubits, the strongest source of decoherence is the magnetic dipolar interaction. To minimize it, spins are typically diluted in a diamagnetic matrix. For example, this dilution can be taken to the extreme of a single phosphorus atom in silicon, whereas in molecular matrices a typical ratio is one magnetic molecule per 10,000 matrix molecules. However, there is a fundamental contradiction between reducing decoherence by dilution and allowing quantum operations via the interaction between spin qubits. To resolve this contradiction, the design and engineering of quantum hardware can benefit from a 'bottom-up' approach whereby the electronic structure of magnetic molecules is chemically tailored to give the desired physical behaviour. Here we present a way of enhancing coherence in solid-state molecular spin qubits without resorting to extreme dilution. It is based on the design of molecular structures with crystal field ground states possessing large tunnelling gaps that give rise to optimal operating points, or atomic clock transitions, at which the quantum spin dynamics become protected against dipolar decoherence. This approach is illustrated with a holmium molecular nanomagnet in which long coherence times (up to 8.4 microseconds at 5 kelvin) are obtained at unusually high concentrations. This finding opens new avenues for quantum computing based on molecular spin qubits.

We introduce a new family of complexes of general formula [

[ErW10O36]9- is the first polyoxometalate behaving as a single-molecule magnet (SMM). It shows frequency-dependent out-of-phase magnetization and a thermally activated single relaxation process with an effective barrier of 55.8 K. This single lanthanide ion polyoxometalate is the inorganic analogue of the bis(phthalocyaninato)lanthanide SMMs, both exhibiting very similar ligand field symmetries around the lanthanide ion (idealized D4d). It is chemically stable and offers new avenues for organization and processing of single-molecule magnets. Furthermore, it can be made free from nuclear spins and opens the possibility to be used for studies of decoherence on unimolecular qubits.

In this review we discuss the relevance of polyoxometalate (POM) chemistry to provide model objects in molecular magnetism. We present several potential applications in nanomagnetism, in particular, in molecular spintronics and quantum computing.
