Proyecto y hombre en el discurso de Javier Carvajal Javier Carvajal comienza como arquitecto (1953) en una década de intensa reflexión sobre el hombre. La filosofía es consciente de que "los conflictos teóricos han adoptado una realidad tangible en el mundo moderno" 1 . La arquitectura debate sobre el fracaso de la tecnología como medida de la cultura, y del arquetipo de hombre de la ciudad moderna, fraccionado en contradicción con su propia esencia. Dos acontecimientos tienen una influencia directa en la figura de Javier Carvajal: la venida a España de Aalto (1951 y 52) y su encuentro posterior en Finlandia; la visita de Neutra a Madrid (1954) y su amistad desde entonces. Otros dos son de una gran relevancia internacional: el primero la ponencia de Heidegger 2 sobre el auténtico sentido de los términos "construir" y "habitar"; el segundo, el sorprendente discurso de A. y P. Smithson en el CIAM 9 desde unas fotografías de Nigel Henderson.El tema central de la conferencia de Neutra en Madrid, "La Arquitectura como factor humano" 3 , será la relación entre hombre y técnica. Afirma que el arquitecto contemporáneo es capaz de canalizar y transformar la ciencia "hacia lo más íntimo de la existencia humana" 4 sin renunciar a su componente fisiológico y sensorial.Sobre Neutra, Carvajal escribe: "ha sido uno de los primeros, entre los maestros, en plantear la arquitectura en su relación con el hombre real y total a un tiempo, que escapa de los estrechos moldes del funcionalismo y de la razón" 5 . Con su texto, manifiesta su propia preocupación por responder a la experiencia concreta de existir y su dimensión universal. No oculta su deuda con el pensamiento de Gabriel Marcel 6 que entiende la corporalidad del hombre como modo de estar presente en el mundo, pero también como experiencia interna en la que se enfrenta al misterio. Hombre encarnado, itinerante e intersubjetivo, y espiritual. Su estancia en la Academia de Roma (1955-57) le permitió realizar un extenso viaje por Europa. Conoce a Aalto, con quien visita su obra. Queda especialmente sobrecogido ante Villa Mairea, "esa bellísima casa hecha de abedul y juncos que se enrollaban en las columnas" 7 , donde obtiene la enseñanza de hacer con la técnica posible. Aalto buscaba la humanización de la arquitectura 8 armonizando el mundo material con la vida humana; valorando al material por sus cualidades sonoras, visuales, conductivas y táctiles en función de su relación con el cuerpo 9 ; compartía con Heidegger el aprecio por la tradición artesanal como parte del hecho cultural, y la idea de una industria a su servicio.La experiencia europea le conduce al entendimiento de la arquitectura como una herramienta de integración del hombre en su tiempo y espacio. El hombre, animal histórico 10 , es el único capaz de hacer suya la emoción del encuentro con el pasado: "gracias al asombro", decía Kahn, "podemos alcanzar la belleza" 11.
