As a consequence of the detailed investigation of the alunite and other mineral deposits of the Marysvale Region in southwest‐central Utah, opportunity was afforded to map and study the succession of volcanic rocks that underlie most of this area. The Marysvale Region is part of a large area of volcanic rocks, which occupies much of the High Plateaus of Utah (Fig. 1). It is believed that the Marysvale Region covers sufficient area to furnish an adequate sample of this volcanic area, and, though horizontal variations are known to occur, the study may serve as a guide as to what may be expected in other parts of the area. The chemical analyses are the most completely representative of any ever taken in this part of Utah, and they furnish a basis of comparison within the High Plateaus and with other areas in Utah.

An earthquake of major intensity originated in the area east and northeast of Mina in southwest central Nevada on December 20, 1932. The principal shock occurred at about 10h 10m 04s p.m. P.S.T., and was definitely perceptible over an area of some 400,000 square miles, including Nevada, the greater part of California, and parts of Oregon, Idaho, Utah, and Arizona. A circle including such outlying places as Rawlins, Wyoming; Cottonwood, Idaho; San Diego, California, and Klamath Falls, Oregon, would have an area of nearly a million square miles. It thus ranks as a major American earthquake, yet is remarkable in that there was no loss of life and very little damage to property. The explanation for this condition must be sought in the sparse population (scarcely a dozen people in the epicentral area), location of almost all structures on bedrock, lack of water‐soaked alluvium, and probable great depth of origin of the shock.

Thermal energy from groundwater in abandoned, flooded, coal mines has the potential to make a significant contribution to decarbonisation of heat and Net-Zero carbon emissions. In Glasgow, UK, a subsurface observatory has been constructed for mine water heat and heat storage research. We synthesise geological and mine water resource findings from a four-year period of borehole planning, drilling, logging and testing. The heterogenous bedrock is typical of the Scottish Coal Measures Group, whereas superficial deposits are more sand- and gravel-dominated than prognosed. Mine water boreholes encountered workings in the Glasgow Upper, Glasgow Ell and Glasgow Main coal seams, proving water-filled voids, mine waste, fractured rock mass and intact coal pillars with high yields on initial hydrogeological testing. Whilst the depth and extent of mine workings delineated on mine abandonment plans proved accurate, metre-scale variability was expected and proved in the boreholes. A mine water reservoir classification established from the observatory boreholes highlights the resource potential in areas of total extraction, stowage, and stoop and room workings.
