RESUMEThe hydrographic basins are the territorial units considered by the federal laws for the implementation of the National Water Resources Policy and the National System of Water Resources Management. Thus, the adequate delimitation of the boundaries of these areas, become key elements in the regulatory issues of planning and management of water resources. It is added to the delimitation of the hydrographic basin, the importance of knowing the configuration of the use and occupation of the soil, so that one can understand in what way the hydrological relations are behaving before the characteristics of permeability of the existing vegetal cover. In this way, this work proposes to apply the methodology of automatic delimitation of hydrographic basins, as well as to classify the use and the occupation of the delimited area, from the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software. The results obtained with the use of digital elevation data and satellite images confirmed the feasibility of the handling and production of quantitative and qualitative parameters for the basin characterization. Thus, it is based on the idea that these systems are extremely capable of elaborating reports that go beyond the academic reach, being able to be tools of great value in the technical and professional areas.
