This study examined the characteristics of young infants’ lower limb spontaneous movements based on differences in shape of diapers. Twenty-seven healthy infants (103 ± 16.3 days old) were enrolled in this study. We measured the spontaneous movements of their lower limbs in four conditions (Naked, wearing Normal type diapers, wearing Type A diapers, and wearing Type B diapers). The Normal diaper has a wider waist belt than the Type A diaper, and the Type B diaper has a narrower crotch area than the Type A diaper. We observed them in seven indices (the velocity of lower limb movements, the trajectory area of knee movement in the sagittal plane and the frontal plane, the distance between both knees and between side of abdomen and knee, and correlation of velocities between side of abdomen and knee and between left and right ankles). The results showed that the velocity of the lower limb movements in the Naked condition was higher than when wearing Normal diapers. The value for the trajectory area of knee movement in sagittal plane, which reflects the range of lower leg lifting movements and closeness of such movements to the trunk, for the Type B diaper condition was higher than that for the Normal diaper condition. This result indicates that the shape of the diaper affects the spontaneous movements of the lower limbs of young infants.
Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) of acetic acid bacteria functions as the primary dehydrogenase of the ethanol oxidase respiratory chain, where it donates electrons to ubiquinone. In addition to the reduction of ubiquinone, ADHs of Gluconobacter suboxydans and Acetobacter aceti were shown to have a novel function in the oxidation of ubiquinol. The oxidation activity of ubiquinol was detected as an ubiquinol:ferricyanide oxidoreductase activity, which can be monitored by selected wavelength pairs at 273 and 298 nm with a dual-wavelength spectrophotometer. The ubiquinol oxidation activity of G. suboxydans ADH was shown to be two times higher in 'inactive ADH', whose ubiquinone reductase activity is 10 times lower, than with normal 'active' ADH. No activity could be detected in the isolated subunit II or subunit I/III complex, but activity was detectable in the reconstituted ADH complex. Inactive and active ADHs exhibited a 2-3-fold difference in their affinity to ubiquinol despite having the same affinity to ubiquinone. Furthermore, the ubiquinol oxidation site in ADH could be distinguished from the ubiquinone reduction site by differences in their sensitivity to ubiquinone-related inhibitors and by their substrate specificity with several ubiquinone analogues. Thus, the results strongly suggest that the reactions occur at different sites. Furthermore, in situ reconstitution experiments showed that ADH is able to accept electrons from ubiquinol present in Escherichia coli membranes, suggesting the ubiquinol oxidation activity of ADH has a physiological function. Thus, ADH of acetic acid bacteria, which has ubiquinone reduction activity, was shown to have a novel ubiquinol oxidation activity, of which the physiological function in the respiratory chain of the organism is also discussed.
Autonomic nervous function test and personality study were performed on 85 vertigo patients (25 Meniere's disease, 25 peripheral vertigo, 4 vertebulobasilar insufficiency, 14 other central vertigo, 17 other types of vertigo). As the index of autonomic function, sensitivity of the baroreflex to blood pressure change was investigated. For this purpose phenylephrine was injected intravenously and trinitroglycerin was administered subglottically. CMI and Y-G tests were used for studying a personality. The patients with Meniere's disease especially on the vertigo attack, showed high sensitivity in barorefiex activity when trinitroglycerin was used to reduce blood pressure. We considered it a sympathicotonic state. Also major population of Meniere patients were classified into abnormal types in Y-G and/or CMI tests i.e. nervousness and instability, compared with the other entities of patient groups. These results suggest that vertigo attack may be occurred basing on the autonomic dysfunction, which also has some relation with specific personality.
