Deglaciation patterns of the Laurentide ice sheet in southern Québec were related to climatic and nonclimatic factors. Thinning of the ice sheet and thermolatitudinal ice retreat are directly linked to the global warming at the end of late Wisconsinan time, between 17 ka and 11 ka. However, correlations between regional deglacial events and global climatic oscillations during that period have yet to be established, except for the St. Narcisse Moraine event, which has been assigned to the Dryas III, and perhaps for the reactivation of Laurentide ice in the middle Chaudiere Valley area during an older cold event. Nonclimatic factors also played a major role on the deglaciation of the region. After the last glacial maximum, the Laurentide ice sheet began to decrease, and the St. Lawrence corridor channelized a major ice stream, the St. Lawrence ice stream, which became a major feature of the southeast sector of the ice sheet. The St. Lawrence ice stream is a flow convergence zone caused by a combination of ice dynamics and topographic factors and rapid ablation at its terminus. The head of the flow convergence migrated deeply into the Laurentide ice sheet and caused thinning of adjacent ice masses. As a consequence of this accelerated ablation, an Appalachian sector became differentiated from the main ice sheet. Regionally, the terminus of the ice stream was a calving bay that retreated along the Laurentian channel to the mouth of the Saguenay fjord. The ice stream and the deglaciated estuary generated the well-known flow reversal along much of the northern margin of the Appalachian sector. In addition to these generalized deglaciation processes, local and regional topographic features influenced the ice dynamics and the final deglaciation patterns.
Around 10 580yr BP, the Goldthwait Sea deposited some 2,50 m of fossiliferous mud in an inlet on the north shore of the St. Lawrence Estuary. The deposit was raised to a 120 m altitude. It is visible at Les Éboulements, in the Charlevoix region, 60 km northeast of Québec City. Nested in a series of barrier beaches, it is due to an intertidal sedimentation episode at low slikke level. The diatomiferous flora (17 taxons and 27 genera) is represented by benthic elements, especially Diploneis smithii. The coastal fauna (3 taxons and 6 genera) is dominated by Hiatella arctica and Musculus niger. Isotopic composition of the fossil molluscan shells indicate slightly warmer and fresher coastal waters than present time waters in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Along the coast lied an herbaceous tundra where arctic-alpine species like Dryas integrifolia, Salix herbacea, Armeria labradorica, Silène acaulis and saxifrage grew. Inland lied an arborescent tundra. Fossil ice wedges in correlative coastal deposits indicate a permafrost.
One hundred and twenty metres of Wisconsinan sediments were deposited in the valley of the Bras du Nord-Ouest, west of Baie-Saint-Paul (Charlevoix). Several stratigraphie exposures show thick sub-aquatic deposits overlain by till. The sub-aquatic sediments include fine sands topped by 60 m of rhythmites. These rhythmites contain dropstones, diamictic lenses and syngenetic involutions. All of these features are indicative of a proglacial environnement. Despite their thickness, the rhythmites belong to one single palynozone: a shrub tundra dominated by Betula glandulosa, Alnus crispa and Gramineae. Due to the presence of a few fresh water diatoms and the high elevation (300 m) of the top of the rhythmites, it is suggested that the rhythmites were deposited in a lake rather than in a marine environment. Given its physiographic location in an open valley in connection with the St. Lawrence Estuary, the paleolake had to be an ice-dammed lake. A melt-out till about 20 m thick overlies the Ice-dammed Lake Deposits of St. Placide. Locally the till - a diamicton with some fine sandy layers - thickens into a moraine of up to 52 m. Glacial flow was from the north. The Ice-dammed Lake Deposits of St. Placide and the till are two members belonging to one single formation related to the Trois-Rivières Stadial. The Ice-dammed Lake Deposi...
