El sobrepeso y la obesidad afectan a todos los países alrededor del mundo, es común observar su inicio durante la niñez. Es secundario tanto a factores ambientales como genéticos. (1, 2) Se ha asociado a un aumento en la morbilidad y mortalidad de enfermedades, como diabetes mellitus y enfermedades cardiovasculares. (3) Podemos evaluarlo de forma sistemática midiendo el índice de masa corporal y a partir de ello clasificarlo y así calcular los riesgos para el paciente. Objetivo: Determinar la prevalencia de sobrepeso y obesidad en estudiantes de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Francisco Marroquín. Detallar el peso y talla de los estudiantes. Establecer una base de datos con las medidas antropométricas de los estudiantes. Evaluar los factores de riesgo para enfermedad cardiovascular asociados a sobrepeso y obesidad. Metodología: Transversal observacional. Se pesó y midió a 134 estudiantes de primer a tercer año de la Facultad de Medicina, luego se calculó el índice de masa corporal y se clasificó a los estudiantes en bajo peso, normal, sobrepeso y obesidad. Resultados: De los 134 estudiantes se encontró que 11% de estudiantes con bajo peso, 55% en peso normal, 28% en sobrepeso y 6% de estudiantes en obesidad. Conclusión: Se encontró que la prevalencia de sobrepeso y obesidad es parecida a la de estudios realizados en estudiantes de otros países, tanto en hombres como en mujeres. Se pudo observar que la relación de uso de cigarrillo, alcohol y aumento de presión arterial, con sobrepeso y obesidad no es significativa y se concluyó que pudo ser debido al tamaño de la muestra y que más adelante, con el crecimiento de esta, la relación puede cambiar.
Introducción: El consumo de bebidas alcohólicas es un hábito a nivel mundial, sin embargo el nivel de consumo y las consecuencias del mismo varían entre géneros y entre distintas poblaciones demográficas. Hace 10 años se observó que un 47% de los hombres consumen alcohol en cantidades moderadas, comparado con un 24% de mujeres. Recientemente se ha observado que la brecha sobre el consumo de alcohol entre hombres y mujeres ha disminuido tanto en cantidad de alcohol por día, como en el consumo excesivo de alcohol en un solo episodio. Objetivos: Los objetivos de presente estudio fueron evaluar los parámetros del consumo de bebidas alcohólicas entre estudiantes masculinos y femeninos de la Universidad Francisco Marroquín, e identificar si existe una relación estadísticamente significativa entre ellos. Metodología: Se evaluaron 150 hombres y 150 mujeres con un test para determinar la presencia de desorden por uso de alcohol, y mediante un análisis estadístico evaluar si existía similitud entre ambos parámetros. Resultados: Los resultados demuestran una similitud estadísticamente significativa (t=0.008849563) del consumo de bebidas alcohólicas entre hombres y mujeres. Discusión y conclusiones: Se demostró que el consumo moderado de bebidas alcohólicas en hombres no ha cambiado de manera significativa durante los últimos 10 años; con un dato previo 47% ante un consumo actual de 49%. Sin embargo el porcentaje de población femenina que consume cantidades moderadas de bebidas alcohólicas ha aumentado estadísticamente ya que el resultado fue 39% comparado con un 24% de hace 10 años.
Introducción: El paro cardiorrespiratorio es la documentación de la pérdida del pulso y respiración. La resucitación cardiopulmonar (RCP) está compuesta por compresiones torácicas interpuestas por ventilaciones, las cuales pueden producir el retorno de circulación espontánea, un ritmo y pulso viable. Los parámetros de cómo realizar RCP están definidas por guías consensuadas, pero estos no son rutinariamente medidos, por lo que la calidad es desconocida. Objetivos: Determinar el grado de conocimiento teórico y práctico del manejo del paro cardiorrespiratorio en estudiantes de 6to. año de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Francisco Marroquín utilizando simuladores clínicos. Metodología: Estudio descriptivo y abierto, donde se incluyeron 26 estudiantes usando simuladores de alta fidelidad de RCP, las cuales proveen respuestas fisiológicas realísticas, por medio de algoritmos matemáticos generados por programas en computadoras. Resultados: De los 26 estudiantes 0% aprobó el examen teórico con un promedio de 77.4 puntos; en la evaluación práctica ninguna pareja logró una efectividad mayor al 80%. El promedio de la profundidad de las compresiones fue de 3.38 cm, el promedio de liberación post-compresión fue de 51% y el promedio de tiempo de interrupción total fue 79 segundos. El análisis estadístico demostró que no hay relación entre los resultados del test teórico y la efectividad en las compresiones y ventilaciones en el manejo del paro cardiorrespiratorio. Conclusiones: Se pudo evidenciar que los estudiantes no tienen la competencia apropiada en Soporte Vital Básico y Avanzado, por lo que se recomienda enfocar los cursos de Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) a un mayor abordaje práctico con simuladores fisiológicos y que los estudiantes realicen el curso en periodos de tiempo más seguidos.
Introducción: El uso inadecuado de antibióticos es un problema de salud internacional que trae consecuencias devastadoras como resistencia bacteriana, aumento de morbi-mortalidad, etc. Objetivos: El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar y analizar los patrones de las prescripciones de los antibióticos utilizados en pacientes internados en un hospital privado de Guatemala. Metodología: Durante el primer semestre del año 2013 se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo de corte transversal. Fueron incluidos todos los pacientes hospitalizados en los servicios del Hospital Privado, y se excluyeron aquellos que recibían tratamiento antibiótico profiláctico, pacientes recién nacidos y de la unidad de intensivo. Resultado y Conclusión: De un total de 631 registros médicos revisados, 563 fueron incluidos en el estudio y 42.5% de los pacientes recibieron tratamiento antibiótico. Hubo en total 239 prescripciones de antibiótico, de la cual 89.5% de los prescripciones se clasificaron como uso inadecuado.
