: This paper reports on a study conducted to examine the development of cadets’ soft skills by implementing project-based learning in Moodle LMS during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was classroom action research following the Kemmis & McTaggart’s model. It was conducted in three cycles, each consisting of plan, action, observation, and reflection. The participants of this study were the cadets from four different study programs at Sekolah Tinggi Maritim Yogyakarta currently enrolled in online classes. The data were collected through observations and focused-group discussions. The results showed that the implementation of projectbased learning in Moodle LMS contributed effectively to the development of the cadets’ soft skills including responsibility, discipline, creativity, and problem-solving. After implementing the projectbased learning for about 16 week-meetings, the researchers recorded the gradual improvement in the soft skills performed by the cadets as follows: 39.42%(low) in Pre-cycle, 52.71% (average) in Cycle I, 69.91% (high) in Cycle II, and 83.71% (very high) in Cycle III. The aforementioned skills were perceived as key fundamental skills required by the cadets to perform their jobs successfully in the 21st century workplace, particularly in the maritime industry. Keywords : Soft skill, project-based learning, Moodle LMS
This study explored the concept of “HEROINE” in the context of “Darna,” a Filipino graphic narrative written by Mars Ravelo that was first published on May 13, 1950 by Filipino Komiks. Extracted from the 27 episodes of “Darna” are realities of experience as well as innuendos related to the real character of Darna, the super heroine. Further, the study delved into a deeper meaning of heroine beyond its lexical meaning. As a result, the researcher formulated her own definition of “HEROINE” as “Humaneness and Equanimity in Reimagining Optimistic, Iconic, Novel, and Empowered” persona, which led to the findings that, indeed, Darna has reached her apotheosis as a superheroine. These insights were not fathomed had it not been for the researcher’s focus on close reading, application of Expressive Realism, and “Argustic” reading. Keen eyes are needed to enjoy reading a graphic narrative which is both visual and verbal. The study proved that in Philippine society, Darna is the most accepted, loved and idolized Filipino icon as savior of a devastated and crippled society after World War II. Lastly, it is aimed that this humble analysis will put itself into the realm of a body of Pop Literature and the Humanities.
This study focused on the perceptions of Maritime faculty of the University of Saint Anthony, Iriga City Philippines, on the shift of traditional to online instruction since the pandemic in March 2020 to the present. It is a purely qualitative study, a case study to specific, that used coding as its method to interpret and analyze the data gathered from unstructured interviews of the selected faculty of the Maritime department. Further, the study identified the experiences and challenges that confronted the faculty members; thus, enabled the researchers to arrive at conclusions and render recommendations. The findings of the study showed that Maritime faculty experiences on online instruction were deeply rooted on practicality and accessibility. It is both refreshing and difficult to do accordingly. The challenges were mostly tied to resources and investments used by the faculty during online interaction. This study shall become a basis for the implementation of new policies in the department in terms of faculty development, materials development and formulation of teaching strategies.
