The aim of this research is to find out the difficulties of reading comprehension faced by the first semester of students in FKIP UIR Pekanbaru. Kualitative research design in case study used in this research by using the instruments were questionnaire and interview guide. Based on the results of analyzing data from the questionnaire and interview, the reseacher found most of students’ difficulties in reading comprehension because they have no motivation in reading habit, they read a little or nothing. It is considered to be a problem for the students to comprehend a reading text. Another students’ difficulties in reading comprehension was the low reading skill. The students complained about the fact that they found, they need to study hard to remember the information they just read. They also need much time to read the text to overcome their problem. Too difficult reading material is also one of students problem in understanding the reading text. The material of reading is unfamiliar for them and grammatical complexity is also a reason why the students failed to comprehend the text correctly. The sentences in reading text too long or having complicated sentences. Related with these problem, new words and long texts are seen by the students as a major obstacle to comprehend a reading text.
The current intensive reading instruction is predominantly teacher-controlled and textbook-bound, finding it challenging for students to take develop of their own learning and to find learning opportunities to practice. Moodle e-learning as one of the selected learning management system will be used to solve these learning problems. This study aims to evidently identify major gaps and the needs of Moodle elearning by the students and lecturer in learning process of intensive reading class. Descriptive method with survey technique was used in this study. In collecting the data, questionnaire distributed for seventyeight students and interviewed five reading lecturers. The result of analysis data revealed that ninety percent of learners need the changes of learning proses of intensive reading by using the smart media such e-learning Moodle, and all of reading lecturers gave positive responds to implement an e-learning to improve their teaching experience. Findings in the present study could be provided as implications for course designers and recommendations for future studies.
Kebiasaan Membaca (reading habit) merupakan salah satu kegiatan individu yang terkait dengan motivasi dan keingintahuan tentang sesuatu atau informasi yang dibutuhkan dan berguna yang berasal dari masing-masing individu. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat sumber bacaan online yang digunakan dalam proses pembelajaran dalam hal ini dapat membantu membangun reading habit mahasiswa Universitas Islam Riau. Disamping menyajikan banyak sumber bahan bacaan yang dapat diakses oleh siswa di mana saja, sumber bacaan online juga dapat memudahkan mahasiswa dalam melakukan kegiatan belajar di mana pun mereka berada. Penelitian kualitatif deskriptif yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini menggunakan kuesioner, reading log dan wawancara sebagai alat untuk mengumpulkan data. Hasil analisis data dari ketiga instrument pada penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan sumber bacaan online dalam proses pembelajaran telah mengubah kebiasaan membaca (reading habit) mahasiswa dari budaya membaca konvensional menjadi budaya yang telah mengintegrasikan teknologi baru kedalam proses pembelajaran membaca. Hal ini dibuktikan oleh data yang menyatakan 75% mahasiswa sudah memiliki kebiasaan membaca. Jika dibandingkan dengan kebiasaan membaca mahasiswa sebelum menggunakan sumber bacaan online, terjadi peningkatan yang signifikan, yang mana 87% mahasiswa masih memiliki kebiasaan baca rendah. Disamping itu, sumber bacaan online juga memberikan perubahan positif bagi mahasiswa yang memiliki motivasi rendah dalam membaca menjadi aktivitas membaca yang menyenangkan.
The aim of this study are to describe the EFL learners’ reading habit, the factors influence of reading habit, and the impact of the use Online Reading Resources on promoting students’ reading habit. 156 EFL learners FKIP- Islamic University of Riau involved as participants who read by using online reading resources. The study employed questionnaire, reading log, and interview intensively to collect the data. The results of analysis data from instruments were used in this study reflected that the use of online reading resources as a source of reading material has changed the reading habits of the learners, from conventional reading cultures into integrated the new technologies in reading process. There were 75% students already have got reading habit. It was significant increase than before. Besides that, online reading resources also provided positive changes for students who have low motivation in reading to be a fun reading activity. Supporting of teacher, parents, and environment help the learners establish their reading habit. The significant reason of learners get the reading habit was to complete the task. The result implies that the learners expected to read more and intensively to get the greatly reading habit. In conclusion, online reading resources are helpful to work the task, to get much information, and to improve learners’ knowledge in reading.
